Membership is effectively free with their $20 bonus gift card to offset the $20 cost of the membership. It's definitely worth signing up IMO especially if you like outdoor activities. The 10% you save is a nice perk that really adds up
25% off Darn Tough socks, hopefully combined with their usual quantity discount of 10% off 3 pairs or more - I'll be loading up on those.
If you're not a "member" you're leaving money on the table shopping at REI.

.. He also said that it is unlikely that bikes and Yakima/Thule roof racks or cargo boxes will ever go on sale again with the 20% off coupon.
They will eventually, but not anytime soon.. all the Yakima and Thule and Kuat racks and other components are very scarce.

As for bikes, problem is the industry was already hard-hit by tariffs in 2019 then when it was doubled-over it got a swift shot to the kidneys by covid. THEN demand shot through the roof by everybody who couldn't go workout at their beloved indoor gym. And all the people who make all the separate multitude of parts that make up a single bike – unlike many of those who want to buy the bikes, those who work in manufacturing the parts could not do their jobs from home and are still heavily impacted by covid since many of these areas will be lagging behind in vaccine distribution for a long while. And even though some bikes are now slowly trickling out & about, we've got containers of goods sitting at ports awaiting processing.

It's a whole, messy shitshow. Everything is connected.

Any insight into the kingdom tent? Been hearing from friends something is wrong with the latest model regarding stitching and staying dry. Is it still a good buy?

What store beats a one year return policy? If you buy something and don't put it through the paces before a very generous one year return policy runs out, that's not really on the store.
Costco.

What's with so much controversy over REI? The prices? I find they sell at MSRP, but not exceeding any other seller's retail price. It can't be their service policy which they're known well for, or people must rarely have their expectations met and be disappointed. Why must people be so bothered? I only am because this happens every REI thread.

In my case I just tried on climbing shoes there. Thanks to their feedback and just for trying on different models and sizes (w/o socks), I plan on buying from them. And look, it'll be on sale too.

Because being able to shop from a million different places on the internet has made many consumers into fickle, cheap, cutthroat bastards who are only interested in buying shit at the absolute cheapest price above all else. Does the retailer pay their employees decent wages? Who the fark cares! Do they give back to the customers or their community?? fark 'em! And who needs a return policy since when it breaks, who cares, I'll just throw it in the trash and go out and buy more shit from some other cheap source!

It's hilarious to see comments online citing how REI marks up prices from these idiots who can't be bothered to learn that REI doesn't mark up, instead simply sells much of their products at MSRP. "Oh, it's cheaper on Amazon? That must be REI marking up their prices again!!" FFS, people, get a clue. You think that industry-leading return policy comes at no cost? You think those brick & mortar stores across 40 states don't cost anything to run? Undercutting your 'competition' is a race to the bottom.

But hey, whatever. You enjoy that counterfeit junk bought from a third-party seller for 40 bucks less.

How to get the member 10% off?
Is it discount or is it the rewards that I will get later?

10% is rewards earned on full price item purchases. This is disbursed as yearly dividend in Spring I think.

Well said my friend Applause I have been a loyal member since 1998, I do not mind paying a little extra for the convenience, see the item before making a decision, their awesome customer service, return policy, the dividend program. I am so glad they still exist unlike many others.

I was in store a week or so ago and the associate told me this would be the 20%-off a full price item sale. Looks like he was wrong, which is too bad as my hiking shoes need replacement (and REI retail price is as good or better than anyone's on these shoes).
