I'm just finishing this book again. I hadn't read it since it released and had forgotten how different it is from the movie.

I read it right before the movie came out and the biggest memory I have was that Spielberg replaced about 200 pages of science stuff with 10 minutes of an animated DNA strand.

Probably fine for brevity, but it felt very Jar Jar Binksy at the time. I cringed. But the movie was still good.

Yea I had forgotten how much Spielberg changed for the movie. Characters are the same names but different personalities. First half the book follows the movie pretty closely but things become very different once the dinos are out. I remember the follow up, The Lost World, being nothing like the movie. Planning to read that next.

Absolutely great book. Read it about 25 years ago though.

I remember when Michael Chrichton was an author, and not someone who kept telling us who we should vote for. I miss him.

The movie ends very differently from the book, so no, if all you know of is the movie, you don't know how it ends. The book and the movie are completely different experiences.

This is a great deal for a fantastic hard science fiction book. Spielberg's movie is science fantasy.

I had to read this book as part of my Engineering crossover assignment with my English Lit 101 in college, and boy, I could not put this book down. Definitely one of Crichton's best work.

The primary difference between the movie and the book, to me anyways, was tackling the philosophical question about whether humankind should play god, that is should we do something just because we can? I think the movie just touches lightly on that theme, whereas the book goes deeper.

I believe that's because the movie was basically in post before the book came out.

After 466 pages. It's a totally different story. The movie was just a reimagining of a few blended scenes from the book. The Lost World movie would make absolutely no sense if you had only read Jurrasic Park.
