These are pretty much the best value HEPA air purifiers you can find. Keep in mind they come with 2 years' worth of filters (a total of 8 pre-filters and 2 HEPA filters), while most only come with the initial set.

They are rated with a CADR (clean air delivery rate) of 232 CFM, which (depending on ceiling height and how many air changes per hour you want) are generally really solid for about a 350 sq. ft. room (at 5 ACH).

My only nitpick is that this is a combo HEPA filter + ionizer, and generally I avoid ionizers/plasma/oxidizers -- true HEPA filters are more proven and produce zero potential byproducts. Sending ions into the air has the potential to create ozone or react with various things in the air to produce VOCs. These are certified by CARB to be very low-ozone, though. You CAN turn off the "Plasmawave" ionizer, but you have to re-do it every time you turn the unit back on.

It comes with Wi-Fi to control it, which may or may not be useful to you. Works fine for me so far.
Says start 9/29. C'mon rookie!!!
You can turn off the ionizer via the App control or by pressing and holding both the left and right arrow buttons for about 3 seconds.

While WiFi features may seem a gimmick, it does add extra features and controls (obviously besides just controlling it remotely). The app will include scheduling to automatically turn it on and off at the same time, which would otherwise have to be implemented via a screen and more buttons on the unit which would in turn increase cost.

I haven't used it to clear the air of mold/mildew but it will do the job. HOWEVER, it will not remove the mold/mildew from the surface of the walls... or anything else. It will filter the air only.

Keep in mind that you will want to replace all the filters much more often than usual since you don't want that 'living' mold/mildew hanging around too long. The spores may just 'get a second wind'!
Yea, that was my understanding.. I'm also curious how Winix compares to Coway as far as removal of spores in the air.

Does this C545 stand a chance of removing cigar smoke from a small room (12 x 8)?
My Coway (similar to this) will do the job BUT any smoke that sticks to walls, or anything else, will not be removed.

When I was doing my research before buying the Coway, many buyers were upset that it didn't clean the dust off their stuff. These units are only designed to clean what's in the AIR. It's important to do a thorough dusting/cleaning and then keep the unit on AUTO to catch the new particles from building up on surfaces.

Curious how folks use these since it says it's for room size of about 360 square ft. Do folks use one for each room?
While the CADR of this one (232 CFM) would be sufficient for 2 mid-sized bedrooms, if you're not getting airflow between them, in practice this will clean one room really really well and not really touch the air in the other room.

Generally, you would want properly-sized units in each room. You could get smaller ones than this for bedrooms, or run these on a lower speed (high speed is quite loud, the other 3 speeds are quite unobtrusive).

For a whole house, there is also the option of upgrading the filters in your HVAC system to MERV-13 or better. (MERV-13 isn't as good as HEPA, but most residential HVACs can't just stick in HEPA filters due without reducing airflow.)

From the reviews, they are similar. I have the Coway and the spec numbers are about as good as it gets for a consumer machine under $500.

As of the last posting of a Winix deal, I finally got the time to physically disable the ionizer. My concern was that it was still "On" while "Off" since I was experiencing a dry cough

It's 9 screws (2 in the handle) all the way to the control box and then just a simple connector from the ionizer to the control board. I unplugged it and also flipped the ionizer around since I wasn't sure if it was the ozone / ions that bothered me or carbon fiber dust.

No weird latches or having to "pop" pieces off. Once the first 8 screws are removed, the middle panel comes off and the unit remains freestanding.

Was the old model like C515? Too bad I got 4 of them last time, still barely use them. I think the difference between this and older one is this supports Wifi and smart app.

Hey SD'ers !!

I have not owned these types of room filters in the past so it would be first if I bought this unit.

I was wondering if these types of filters also reduce dust in the room. I notice a layer of dust that shows up on my bedroom furniture a day or two later after cleaning the room. I do vacuum the carpets often in the bedroom

Can I expect that dust to reduce if I was to buy this unit? For those who own these types of HEPA air purifiers, what has been your experience in regards to the dust?

thank you !!

Yes it should. In fact this type of filter is overkill if all you want is dust reduction. In fact, for those on a budget, buying something like a 20"x20" MERV 13-16 filter and taping it to a standard $15 20" box fan makes a very potent air filter (albeit not quite true HEPA grade, but still more than sufficient to remove allergens/bacteria/particulate/etc) that moves titanic amounts of air for less than $40. These are also great for construction projects to keep dust and contaminants at a minimum.

Yes, for sure they will reduce dust, as well as many other things from the air (smoke, pollen, viral aerosols, etc.). HEPA filters remove almost all contaminants in the air that passes through them.

The suggestion of using a box fan with a MERV filter is awesome. I just happen to have an unused box fan in the garage,

Thank you for your feedback.
Good to know these types of units will help towards limiting dust. A previous reply suggested to use a box fan (which I happen to have) with a filter. I may try that as a quick solution first to see how much impact it has.

Anyway to get this without being a member? Sigh.
If you go to costco and buy a gift card, I believe you can use that gift card as a one time purchase. To the best of my knowledge, this will not require a need to purchase membership.

If you have a $100 costco gift card and you only buy $10 worth, you will not be able to return back to costco till you finish that card. With your first purchase, they'll cash you out.

Not a costco employee or affiliated with them in any way but generally speaking as a typical shopper, their membership cost will get you a great bang for the buck. You will recover the membership fees from the savings (like this one) throughout the year, Besides, where else (ok, don't answer that) you can purchase TP rolls in bulk laugh out loud

Are filters for c535 compatible with c545? Or the size is different?
