I've been keeping my eye on this. I had to go to three different Home Depots in my area, but the third one also gave me a military discount. Subtotal (before tax) came out to $1866.75.

…now I've got to study YouTube on how to install it…

You went into stores to order this? They actually had it in stock? I am interested in how you got the 5% for an on-line item.

Questioning if since it seems like you ordered in-store, you might also get to apply for the Menards 11% rebate match on your receipt, if you can get that to work or not. If so, this is making me consider it as a strategy.

lol

ymmv for the expected savings on a 4.5KW 10-year $2,100 water heater/heat pump versus an electric water heater with a $50 timer

These are about 4x more efficient than a standard tank. They also have a bonus that they cool and dehydrate the room they are in, typically a garage or basement.

The downsides are they are not silent when running, and they are very large and typically need 12" clearance above to remove the filter, and they need a good sized room to draw heat from.

They did not have it in stock. They approved 10% military discount. A manager had to come over. Like I said - it took 3 Home Depot's, but it's obviously possible.

I had the same question, and just had both up on adjacent windows. Looks like the ProTerra has something with an automatic water shut off safety feature. That, and right now the ProTerra is cheaper (usually it's more than the Platinum)

Yup. The difference is the auto shut off valve

I agree. You can easily get a 10gpm tankless unit for around $1000. Why spend more on this?

I don't have gas and didn't want a tankless electric after researching them. I went with a different model hybrid heat pump because it was much more efficient than my old electric and also dehumidifiers my basement eliminating the need for a separate dehumidifier.

I went from a 40 gallon to an 80 gallon hybrid and my electric bill still went down.

Because running a 150-200A tankless requires a new panel or upgraded service for most homes that were not purpose built. The normal service is 150-200A in most homes for the entire house. It also will eat up ~4 40A breaker positions @240 and need 8GA wire runs to the location. The electrical requirements for most homeowners far exceed the cost of the tankless unit

They are entirely unsuitable if you have hard water - so you need RO or softeners or filters inline or just replace the tankless unit frequently. The water conditioning systems are all maintenance items with recurring costs, and the maintenance cycles on tankless units are annual and often more frequent with the minimum being a pain I'm the butt flush

You also would have to replumb or relocate the pipes in most older homes. Theres a lot of good reasons to not get tankless for the vast majority of people

You don't need a giant tankless. You size a tankless by the inlet to the house, so 1" or 3/4" for most homes. But the heat pump is more efficient and you can do recirculating for instant hot water. But I wouldn't install one north of the mason Dixon line. Probably not indoors also. You would need a utility shed beside your house.

The hard water thing is arguable because you should treat it regardless of your choice of water heater. The rest of your points are very valid though. I was very surprised when I first learned how much more it costs to heat water with electricity than gas.

Note the Proterra does not entirely play well with hot water recirc/preheat. Something with the operating algorithm in Energy Saver mode expects EWT of 30 deg under set point. I am set up with preheat from a separate upstream tank harvesting waste heat from a geothermal heat pump, and have to operate the water heater in Heat Pump only instead of Energy Saver mode. Still very efficient but per Rheem not the maximum operating efficiency.

Based on my experimentation and the electric usage charts on the app, Energy Saver mode uses the elements to maintain temp when hot water is not being used.

I had to disable my whole house recirculator once I got my Rheem hybrid, as they did not work well together. I added a point source tankless unit under my kitchen sink to replace the recirculator. This cut my hot water energy usage in half - I didn't realize how much energy is lost during recirculation.

Also, my utility gave me a $500 rebate for a hybrid hot water heater, you may want to check with your utility. I installed myself and s still qualified for rebate.

Added bonus, I was able to mothball my basement dehumidifier (except for August) as the Rheem unit dehumidifies as well.
