Yes! Hawaii sucks, don't come here.
This code doesn't seem to make the flights much cheaper than usual.
You add a companion to your itinerary any time you have companion pass. If you have it now, you can add companion today. If you get it early January via credit cards you have to wait until you have that status to add companion, and hope there's still a seat on the flight. You could book a refundable or points fare now to hold open a seat for your companion in that case.

If you have companion pass now and book a companion ticket early next year but your status expires 12/31, you'll see that companion reservation cancelled around January 1st.

Who has been there recently? Need tips on place & car rental for Oahu & Maui. Both seems to be high. TIA.

Just came back from Oahu..... I'd recommend checking out Turo, an app similar to Airbnb, but you rent people's cars. I rented a brand new Jeep Wrangler for $100ish a day. Plenty of options at reasonable prices.
Also, due to COVID restrictions, most bars and restaurants close at 10pm, last call being 9:30pm and be prepared to whip out vaccination / negative test results at every indoor place. By day 2, I ended up taking a photo of both my vaccination card + drivers license side by side to be more efficient

Crime is super high in Honolulu. Fly in there but stay out of that area. No joke.

Decent price on flights ($350 r/t from DC area)....but sweet mother, everything else is a wreck....looking at Maui January, I am seeing the cheapest hotel is Courtyard at the Airport.....for $585 a night....and car rentals at $120 per night. They could give me the flight for free and I wouldn't go.
and long flight as well, I rather stick with FL and Caribbean next door. I live in DC as well

I'm sure it does suck right now, with all the pent up tourists walking around and insulting the locals.

Went to both over the summer. It was definitely a bit crowded, but things should have calmed down a bit since school is back in session. Rental car rates still seem to be high ($600-700/wk) for the months this deal is for, for Maui you definitely need one. The best thing to do may to be just book one and hope rates will drop then you can rebook the car. On Oahu hotels in Waikiki are really your only option, on Maui I'd suggest looking into getting a condo through a local company which tend to be cheaper than AirBnb or VRBO (we used Quam Properties).

There have been some pretty good deals even throughout the Christmas break without promo. Last week I was able to get 4 nonstop RT tickets from OAK to HNL for 49k RR points + $44.

Also those with a lot of HH points or even MR points to transfer some of the Hilton hotels are very reasonable with points during the holidays. Amex Plat still has their MR:HH 1:2.6 transfer rate, which is decent, especially with HH 5th night free and having HH Gold or Diamond status for extra perks.

Should definitely be on your bucket list, but they do seem to hate tourist and the military. If you go to Oahu just hang out in front of the Hilton and get snacks at the Military Hotel next door.
You are exactly spot on, and its annoying. I was just in Jamaica last week and they frigging love the tourists because their lively hood depends on it. It was very refreshing to actually feel welcomed. I was in one of those open air busses on an excursion, and people that had zero chance of directly benefitting from us were waving and telling us they loved us. Hawaiians just hate you and you can tell. For a state that employs 200,000+ people from tourism and generates over $2 billion in tax revenue, you would think they would be a little happier about it.

That's weird, no return flights from Maui to Boston all winter.

So you can fly out, but can't fly back.
Doesn't sound like a bad place to spend winter, whats the problem?

Just a heads up. Jan and Feb are rainy months. Fact.

Doesn't matter if planes are full or empty of people. They make all their money on cargo with those planes to the islands. Former Delta Airline employee here.
