I'm pretty sure if one of the leading authorities on sound reproduction research (Dr. Floyd Toole) decided to go through the expense and effort of hanging 150lbs., full sized speakers on his wall they probably do actually sound better than their bookshelf counterparts. And yes, he does integrate them with subs so they are not running full range even though they are one of the true full range floorstanding speakers that don't cost more than a house. Like I said, the only benefit to bookshelf speakers is if you need to actually put them on a bookshelf or wall.
That said I don't think those JBLs would be "better."
I don't own the 580s...I do have the 590s...and while those produce a nice wall of sound that the Polks couldn't..they would do so at the loss of that silky smooth detail from the Polk's tweeter.

What's better "matching" in "performance" is there than "identical" subs! π€
"Identical" means EXACTLY THE SAME according to Merriam-Webster.
You only need subs that "match" each other in their performance. They don't have to have IDENTICAL performance. My shoes MATCH but aren't IDENTICAL, lol πππ
If one subs is -3db down at 17hz and one sub is -3db down at 19hz, it's inconsequential. If one sub has maximum spl of 110db at 20hz and the one sub has a maximum spl of 108db at 20hz, it's inconsequential Why? Because placing them across the room from each other is going to put them in different acoustical environments. That in itself can alter their performance based on their relative relationship to your listening position. Need proof? Listen and measure the performance of your current sub in its current position. Now move it to where your new sub will be placed and listen/measure again. They won't be the same. Your IDENTICAL subs are no longer IDENTICAL. π
Also, keep in mind, some AmEx cards have 9% cashback on JBL.com (my Blue Cash didn't, same exact card that my wife has did).
Best $600 you can spend on audio.
Infinity/JBL/Revel under Harman strove for wide dispersion, neutral sounding speakers (flat frequency response) even off angle. They built speakers based on science and measurements. Who knows what direction they will take now that they are owned by Samsung though.

Reminds me of Me, Myself & Irene!
Hmmm if you have "matching" subs, are they "identical" NO π€β¦β¦ I guess I could then say "My subs MATCH but aren't IDENTICAL, lol πππ"!"
Hmmm if I place and listen to a sub in one placement and then move it to another placement, will it perform and sound differentβ¦β¦. Hmmmm Let me think π€π€£β¦.reminds me of a saying someone used on here:
CAPTAIN OBVIOUS!
If I compare two comparable subs in a room would they "sound" different,
IMO yes
If I play them at the same time, do they now "sound" the same, IMO no.
Does that mean you can not play them together, no NO ONE ever said that!
Would it be "better" to have matching sub, IMO yes
I still like their phones though. For now at least.

If you have to nano-partically break it down just to make a half-witted point maybe stop and get some help?
Fact is the name of the game isn't aesthetics or matching jack. It's about how a speaker (wait for it) sounds, what it outputs with such metrics like: frequency response, spl and dsp (if any)
There are many advantages to floorstanding speakers vs. their bookshelf counterparts other than size and cost. Only time a bookshelf is advantages is if you are limited in placement and have to mount the speakers on a wall or on an actual shelf. Even when crossed to a sub, a floorstanding speaker will outperform a bookshelf.

So buy a bookshelf to save the money and space then spend the money you saved to purchase a stand which now pretty much takes up the same amount of space as a floorstanding speaker, but much less stable for the most part. Sounds like a great idea to me.
