I decided to get mine at best buy instead. They price matched the education store pricing on apple store. I had some best buy gift cards and then use the remaining on paypal with freedom flex to get the +5 calendar and +4 additional on top spend category https://creditcards.chase.com/fre...spendoffer and +1 from ultimate rewards portal for basically 10% ultimate rewards point back which I value at minimum 2 points per dollar so almost 20% back. Best buy also has holiday return policy right now until Jan 16. After 60 days if I decide to keep, I might add apple care+ (which is $240 on education store so almost paid for by the chase freedom flex bonus) or just rely on the freedom flex 1 year extended warranty depending on how many issues pop up but my repair cost will have to within $1200 due to the gift cards I added.

Anything with LPDRR4X requires soldering to PCB. This is "high end" spec for most laptops. JEDEC 3200 is the highest you can go on DDR4 for socketed slots without relying on an XMP profile.

The argument falters on the original M1 with 4266mhz spec LPDDR4X. Any windows laptop with 3733 mhz or 4266mhz spec IS soldered.

The M1 PRO (This deal) is getting into DDR5/X specs due to capable bandwidth. 200GB/S on base model (M1 with DDR4X is 68~GB/S). The M1 MAX model has more video bandwidth(400GB/S) than a dedicated RTX 3060 or 6700XT

Look I don't like apples bullshit as much as the next guy (IE: Soldered NVME/SSD is BS), but the other guy was right. Only specific/large gaming laptops are socketed JEDEC 3200.

I guess it depends on what you personally define as "high end". A random ASUS gaming laptop isn't high end to me, but I'll certainly take a Zenbook 14X with OLED screen. (Innately has soldered RAM)
I stand corrected.
I'm actually a huge fan of Apple's recent hardware advancements but I haven't liked their software throughout the years as I like the versatility of Linux and Windows. I enjoy having the capability of tweaking everything without having any knowledge on coding thanks to the large communities providing the necessary information. My definition of "high end" has now been altered.

I wouldn't use Apple watch to unlock it as thief can use it to access your laptop. Use fingerprint or password.
Ah, but only an unlocked apple watch can be used to unlock your Mac. If you use the default settings on your Apple Watch, it locks immediately when removed from your wrist. So the only way a thief can use your watch to gain access to your MacBook would be to drag you over to it at gunpoint or maybe knock you out… lol by which time you bigger problems than that!

Every single first-year Macbook Pro in recent years has been a dog. 2008: failed GPU. 2012: failed GPU. 2016: flexgate, butterfly keyboards. None of the issues raised their ugly heads until more than a year after launch.

I suggest holding off for 2 years to see if this trend continues.

Too much of a gamble for me, and Macs have been my daily drivers since System 7.

Anyway, these are exceedingly expensive. Oh, and the HDMI port is 2.0 from 2013, not 2.1 that supports much higher resolutions and refresh rates. And nobody knows yet if Apple has fixed the flexgate issue.
They are only exceedingly expensive if you don't care about QoL improvements. The display being 120hz mini-led means color accuracy, brightness and clarity that is literally unmatched by any competing laptop at any price point. Even in desktop monitors you'd have to pay in the thousands just for that (Yes you can get 1/3 of those things for cheaper, but nothing with all three together.) Battery life is crazy for the performance level. Magsafe is back.

Your other points are valid though, this is another 1st gen Apple product, so the potential issue risk is pretty high.

I just signed up for the Costco Citi Visa card and was provided a card number and temp expiration date. Does anyone know if I can use it right away to purchase the macbook and still get the 4 year warranty benefits? Or should I wait until my card arrives?
oh boy! you don't need another citi card to get warranty. most citi cards come with warranty and all you had to do is use one at costco for purchase !! costco provides extra one year warranty, is the only benefit. and of course their return policy is great.

you can't use temp card online.
No. You must have the physical credit card. Your temporary Costco Anywhere Citi Visa® Card can only be used at the Costco warehouse for purchases made at the front registers.

I understand that. But if a $1 hardwired cable results in requiring replacing the display for $800, like the 2016-19 units, the wonderfulness of it won't matter much. Apple has never acknowledged the problem that is a result of horrible design. At least under Jobs, they eventually did so, and fixed the issues in later models. Tim Cook is all about deny, deny, deny (or more like ignore, ignore, ignore) and profits, profits, profits.

Yes, you can use it right away.. just make sure the temp authorization is enough to cover the price of Macbook, sometimes they put $1000 limitation on day1 (temp authorization).

3024 x 1964 120hz mini led 1600 nitt peak screen.

Good luck finding anything remotely comparable for the same or similar price.
Oled beats mini led. A lot of windows laptops have 4k oled displays.
