Probably the main reason people like Roku is less clutter. The home screen only shows your apps and what little advertising there is, is segmented off to the side. There's none of that "recommended shows" that you don't wanted to watch scattered all around the home page.

Roku.also has the air of impartiality. Even if it doesn't hold up perfectly.

Apple has the Apple reputation of charging too much and trying to lock you in.
What am I missing out on by having a Roku and not a Fire Stick? I wouldn't describe Amazon Android products as an open ecosystem when you have to side load the Play store to get additional apps.
Thanks. Same price at Amazon.com [amazon.com]

Has spectrum and Roku worked out anything regarding the spectrum app? I was told a while ago you can not add it to the Roku anymore.
They came to an agreement a couple of months ago and you can download the spectrum app again.

I have just about every streaming device all the way back to the WDTVs.

I prefer Roku by far for our daily needs. It's the main go to if you are just using paid streaming services. (Hulu, Netflix, D+, Amazon...) The menus are quick, clean and simple. It's much easier to get in and out of whatever you want.
  • AppleTV is pretty nice, but for some apps, it has some bad framerates (including Youtube). I might use Apple TV with my iPhone or iPad or some of the tv aps developed for it every once and a while.
  • I used to have Youtube TV, but dropped it when they raised the rates by $10 to add MTV. I didn't want MTV and shouldn't have to pay $10 more for a channel I don't want. If you are using that service, I'd recommend getting a Chromecast.
  • The Firestick is pretty nice and there's a lot of more local apps for it. I find that streaming in apps like Emby have less buffering issues. IMO, it's great once you start sideloading onto it.
I don't like the interface, however. It's extra clicks to get to what I want. Honestly, I'd rather watch Prime on the Roku than the firestick.
  • The Chromecast is okay. I've not gotten the latest one... It wasn't the best for just sitting down with a remote and turning on the TV, however. Interestingly, it's the only set top streaming device that the Oculus supports streaming to.

Has anyone heard anything about an updated (2021/2022) Ultra being released? I have a 2019, my current TV doesn't do Dolby Vision and my Dolby Atmos is currently only 2 upward firing speakers, so I'm not sure about upgrading to this unit right now.

That's turning out not to be true with Roku's recent trend of picking fights with their app vendors. And sure enough it is about to do it with Youtube. https://9to5google.com/2021/10/21...naffected/
Just saw this. I put one helluva jinx on it. I'll take the L. Very disappointing to see.

Where do you find a 1080P HDR source?

Never heard of a non 4K video source that has HDR

I am still baffled why people buy Roku (yes I bought a high end ultra a while back and returned it. I am not completely unfamiliar). It's extremely limited OS. Just get an Android box. Now a days even ONN player can be had for $19 from recent deal (not sure if that is still valid). Firesticks are always there and the new max firestick is even more awesome than firestick 4k. To me it just doesn't make sense why anyone would want a closed echo system that is not Apple with all its shiny-ness and tight integration with iPhone, iPad, Apple watch etc.
I've used many different streaming devices over the years (Fire, Android, Apple devices, etc)... Roku isn't perfect, but based on my experience, the roku products I've used tend to be less buggy and less prone to crashing/lagging issues. I also think the simplicity of the interface makes it easy for most users to understand and get around quickly (just like many apple devices). The main thing I don't like about the roku devices, is the built in media player app is junk and there is no way to upgrade it or install a better one.

I've had that happen a couple times with orders. It is always fun when it happens.

CBS was publishing Star Trek Discovery in HDR with only a 1080p resolution. I don't know if that is still the case or not.

Ok...I had never heard of an 1080P source that had HDR
Being that there is also a wide color gamut necessity as well that you could not take advantage of with a 1080P only capable TV

Is this 2020 Ultra model better than the 2021 4801RW model? The latter one is listed on Walmart for the same price, but right now it's for pre-order.
Quote from ducksoup18 :
Thats the LT version made specifically for walmart i believe. Lacks some key features that this one has so yes this one is better.
The 2020 "Regular" Ultra (4800) and the new 2021 "Walmart" Ultra LT (4801) are 100% identical from all published specs on Roku's Developer page and Wikipedia. But this is the better deal.

(The 2019 "Walmart" Ultra LT (4662) was a reduced version of the 2019 (4670) Ultra and of course surpassed by this 2020 (4800) Ultra. -- The 2019 Walmart LT (4662) will be the $30 one in November. Still the 4800/4801 is a better one if you need the extra memory, storage and Dolby options)
