New cat owner here so I didn't even consider that there were different types of litter. I've just been using whatever is cheap from Walmart or wherever. I assume it's the clay stuff and it seems to work fine. How is this superior? Mask the smell better? Less mess? Are there other benefits?

This product didn't clump enough before the pee hit the bottom of the litter box, so my cat started peeing elsewhere, Switched back to normal litter and he's good. Worlds not so good cat litter

The reason I like it is 1) It's flushable and 2) it won't leave a thin layer of dust all over your house like clay litter does. Not sure on masking the smell but I capital H Hate the way 99% of clay litters smell and this stuff is very much neutral, unless you get the Lavender one which isn't bad either but I mostly use the Red or Green unscented bags. I clean the litter box one or twice a day and I've asked people if they can smell a cat and nobody has ever said they could.

The litter is expensive, but I only need like one bag a month (7 lbs, usually about $9) for my one cat. I'm allergic to the dust from clay litter and tried a few others before I settled on this one. Flushable is a huge plus as well. It's great at clumping and masking smell, but I also scoop it out several times a day b/c my cat is a princess and won't use a litter box if it has more than a couple of clumps in it, so ymmv.

Fwiw, this is my preferred litter...BUT, I've found that it doesn't do well in a litter box in our basement because of higher humidity down there. clumping is far less effective because everything sort of sticks together a bit even when not peed on. I would imagine this wouldn't do as well in high humidity climates, as well.

that said, upstairs, I like it better than any clay litters I've tried (and there have been a lot) for a number of reasons.

The clay is unhealthy for cats. This stuff is so much better, albeit more expensive. But it also lasts twice as long as the clay, so it's a wash. Plus, I can safely flush the poo down the toilet. .
