Omg you can refill using dry ice??? Are there YouTube videos??? I never heard of this!
There are videos, but it's as easy as removing the brass top (once tank is empty), put the bottle on a scale and tare, then add the dry ice until the weight is correct. Screw the brass top back on tightly and let it sit overnight to thaw. My local grocery stores only had block dry ice which was a huge hassle to break up into small enough pieces to drop into the tanks. They make pellet dry ice but I couldn't find it locally in sizes under 50lbs.

I've been using SodaStream for years. I buy my replacement cylinders at Bed, Bath and Beyond. I have those $5 off $15, so I almost always pay $10 per replacement (With trade). The rare times I don't have one of those coupons, I "Splurge" and spend $12 with a 20% off coupon.

Last year, my machine stopped working, and when I reached out to the company, they sent me a replacement along with a spare cylinder for free. Not sure why they did that, but I'm not complaining!

Apparently it is not a slickdeal to buy a Sodastream

Here is why: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huxa101h1zM
His assessment is flawed in that he's purchasing a new CO2 bottle every time at $30 when in fact you do an exchange at 1/2 the price.

I did a search on that earlier, and only found Amazon that sells two bottles for $60 and return bottle for $15 GC. Where and how do you do it for half price?

I've swapped at Staples B&M. My locations hav easy access, rarely a line, quick in and out.

So here is the true breakdown from someone who is very frugal and a sodastream user from last 2 years.
  1. If you use the SodaStream cylinders sold at retail ($15 for exchange) than your soda cost will be very similar to what you buy from costco. There is only a tiny savings with SodaStream per liter but it takes a lot of soda (2-3 years worth) to make up for the upfront cost.
  2. That being said, I always refill the cylinders with Dry Ice from super market. It costs me ~$1.79 to refill the cylinder myself. Its super easy to refill, takes about 10 mins. Now I have invested in multiple cylinders of SodaStream so I can refill all of them at once and it lasts me over 6 months. With this method, my sparkling soda is way way cheaper than super market. Bonus: When there was Co2 shortage during pandemic, SodaStream cylinders were rare to find but I had no issues refilling them myself.

TL:;DR
  1. If you buy cylinder from retail, it wont be comparatively much cheaper
  2. If you refill it yourself, it will be much much cheaper.
How do you refill with dry ice? Is there a guide or youtube video to follow? Would love to learn about this

Yes it's safe. CO2 is CO2. I get my gas from a local welding/gas supply company.

Its the same system people use for home bars/beer keg setups. Basically the same thing as every restaurant/fast food/bar uses on a smaller scale.
thank you.
