I just noticed the MGL combos are $169.99. And the DC combos are 219.99. Essentially if you're in the market you can add a SLX rod for $30.

If you don't want to go xt, the regular slx reel combo is at 139. Both of these have been this price for as long as I've been considering getting a new casting combo (over 8 months).

So not a deal at all.

I will say that 139 is a great price for what I presume is a great combo, and you can mix and match your rod and reel combo, and from what I've read, going xt is worth $20 as you have better casting control on the spool.

I know nothing about fishing, but am a member of a boat club so will be taking a boat out to fish during the cold SouthFlorida winters where we can't hop in the water / sandbars Smilie

That being said, is this all I'll need to fish or are more components needed?

This is not a offshore combo, great for freshwater bass fishing. You will need larger caliber setups for boat.

Bought 4 of these over the last few months. New customers get 10% off when signing up for their emails which can be unsubscribed. At $145 I don't think a better combo could be had. The braking setup is great, very smooth, and quality rods.

Anything close to this for around $75? It's for an up and coming 8yr old...

Not the same reel, slx vs slx xt, and the TD charges $8 oversize shipping, so very close.
Also, a lot more options on rods for the posted deal. If you happen to want what's offered on TD, then yeah, save the $2 or so.

Not at all. You're going to need at minimum a license, line, hooks, bait.

Nope, not at all.
Also, I wouldn't recommend a baitcasting reel to an 8 year old, unless they have proven to be exceptionally receptive of complicated and frustrating tasks with a very high skill floor.

If you absolutely want to ruin fishing for your child (or happen to have a child prodigy that doesn't want to get into piano), I'd look for a used setup, or at least a used rod.
Reels I've used that I've bought for under $50 are the Abu black max and the piscifun phantom and spark pro (amazon used or direct off piscifun with coupon code). I'd pick the phantom out of those three.
Rods, any older used rod of good quality would work, even someone selling their SLX rod because they just wanted a reel! For a kid, try to stay under 7' for sure, and closer to 6'6" if you can. New rods around $50, I'd look at Shimano scimitar at about $40 (some places)- $50, Daiwa AirD-x for around $50.

Honestly, though, just go with a daiwa laguna lt reel and an aird-x reel and throw on some braided line and I'm sure the kid will be a ton happier, and you'll be all in for $100.
