Also the software issues with the 646 have been all fixed with the newest update.
I went out and bought a U8G, which has a pretty good picture, but as others in this thread have said it's kind of un-nerving wondering how long these Chinese brand TV's are going to last. I'd personally feel better about TCL than Hisense, but for my peace of mind I just went ahead and got the Samsung QN90A. First one arrived smashed from Amazon so I ordered one from Bestbuy so I can't compare picture to the U8G or OLED yet.

This and the operating system crashing of the 646
Just another lesson..you get what you pay for and there is no free lunch
If affordable..you are better off with a Samsung or Sony
Bought a Samsung last year and returned it due to horrible banding right out of the box… Apparently very common with Samsung's within 2 years of purchase, luckily mine was noticeable right away. Love Samsung but would pass on theirs until they get QC under control.
I have never had an issue with a Samsung or a Sony TV in that regard
As for the TCL..I have seen literally hundreds of reports of panel uniformity issues, panel lottery, black crush, poor local dimming performance, having to reboot the Tv etc etc
So..of the two, I would say the Samsung is a safer bet
And for me every time I had to return one I would say its $100-150 worth of time and trouble to do so

Here is the truth. TCL and Hisense make TVs that have great picture quality, and have no more uniformity issues than any other major manufacturer at this price point. Those TVs compete with the TVs from Samsung and Sony that cost hundreds more (when both are new or on similar sales). Maybe you have forgotten, but the term panel lottery became prevalent for Samsung TVs back in the KS8000 generation.
There was a time when Sony and Samsung were the new guys and people just like you shit on them for not being RCA or whatever.
So to raise any type of point that has ANY merit you would need those stats
I definitely see open box TCL's at Best Buy
I also read all the posts on AVS forum from ACTUAL owners of TCL's...along with Sony and Samsung
I dont see nearly the issues on panel uniformity, rebooting etc etc
As for selling more of an item...I am not sure that really says anything if the item is cheaper
A cheap product typically always sells
Looks at automobiles, watches or frankly any consumer good
There was a time when Sony and Samsung were the new guys and people just like you shit on them for not being RCA or whatever.
Perhaps you have forgotten
The TCL 617 " defined " what I would call panel lottery
There are pages and pages here and on AVS forum about panel uniformity and trying and returning multiple Tv's
Then there was that 8 series that had some significant issues...but it did get very cheap on clearance
I dont disagree with you that TCL represents a value brand that has a great value proposition
We are just going to have to agree to disagree that its the " same" as a Samsung or Sony minus the brand label on the front
The other element you are missing here is that people that pay more, generally speaking, expect more
So I am going to say that the person paying $500 more for say the Samsung QN90A has a higher set of expectations and is going to nit pick pick their set a whole lot more than the person buying the TCL 635/646

Also weird, Best Buy typically has an exclusivity deal to release the TCL 6 series in their stores weeks and even months before other retailers. Again, weird... 🤔
But I do get what you are saying, as Best Buy "hides" these in plain site, aka TCL does not get its own dedicated section similar to the big 3, because Best Buy knows if they drive you, the blissfully unaware consumer, to the more expensive sets vs the "cheaply made TVs from China" they will make more money. Obviously up to you to decide how you want to spend your money.
