I wish I had never wasted money on one of these. Plex has really gone downhill over the last few years. I bought a plex pass mostly for the live TV features, but it's been a buggy mess on Android for years now. Support is non-existent and the higher ups have made it painfully obvious that they couldn't care less. I finally gave up and switched to Emby for my local media and Channels for live TV.
Here's the page showing the difference between free and paid (pass) plex accounts:
https://support.plex.tv/articles/...e-vs-paid/

I never needed any of the paid features, so I am happy with the free. Just sharing the link for anyone curious.
I've been using Plex for about a decade now and its well worth it.

I've been using Plex for about 3 years. It serves up a few thousand movies from my movie collection (split into 3 libraries: Movies, Kids Movies and Christmas Movies), 4.8 TB (18,554 files) personal Home Videos going back 20+ years some of which were digitized from 8mm video tape. Some of those have no compression which means that they are 2.6GB for 12 minutes and Plex plays them just fine locally or transcodes them on the fly remotely as needed on the remote client's speed.

In addition it contains 686GB (207,150 files) of my photos going back 20+ years which are organized by Year and Month within each year folders. Lastly I put up my MP3's but I find that I don't us the music that much given the YouTube and Apple music subscriptions.

All this media is enjoyed by my family of about 6 different homes plus my sister from Europe. The media is played on all types of devices ranging from Samsung TV, Roku, Apple TV, iPhones, Chrome browsers, etc. Any one of us can pull up any video or any picture.

For example, if I want to see Christmas Home Videos from the year 2010 I can pull it up. And I can pull up the pictures from 2010 December. And I can play the Polar Express. All of this can be done from anywhere in the world on pretty much any device.

My server is a desktop with i7-3770 Intel CPU with 16GB of DDR3 RAM. I installed a video card that support 4K play and that server is connected to my main home TV. I do have the 4-tuner HomeRun OTA recorded but I use that less now since I use YouTube TV. Throughout the house I have a Roku and a three Fire TV 4K stick clients in the 4 bedrooms. All stream flawlessly. I have Comcrap for internet which allows only 40Mbps uploads (download at 1Gbps).

When my family is streaming remotely even to Europe the upload is about 6Mbps so I can have about 3 maybe 4 stream concurrently. I think that the most I've seen was 3 streaming as they all have Netflix and Prime and all that.

I've been thinking about upgrading my desktop server but I have yet to find a reason to spend a few hundred bucks to do it other than just the knowledge to have newer hardware. I will also mention that my personal home movies and photos are backed up locally to other hard drives and the cloud using backblaze.

In conclusion, Plex is an excellent solution to get you and your family to share all the media that you may have. I recommend it highly.

If you have original Blu-ray rips or 4K rips, you are guaranteed to get the best quality for local streaming. But your hardware has to support it. But you probably already know this.

The question comes down to this: are Blu-ray rips as good as HD streaming content? Are 4K rips as good as 4K streaming?

It is obvious that the answer is no and no.

Is HD streaming and 4K streaming good enough compared to the disc counterparts?

If the answer is yes, plex is useless.

I've got hundreds of Blu-ray rips and several handfuls of 4K rips. I own all the media. But I require the best audio and video for my system.

If I had a flat panel and a sound bar, I would probably just stick with streaming
If someone is looking to get the best quality video/audio as you mention then you're correct, Plex is probably not much help there.

However, if one is okay with playing 1080p video with movies at about 2GB in size then Plex is an excellent solution. And this said media will be available to any friend/family member in the world on pretty much any device.

That's just movies but the same goes for photos and in my case personal home videos recorded all the way back to VHS, then 8MM, and then digital Sony and now 4K material. And again, all this I am sharing with my family some of which is in Europe streaming it flawlessly at a rate of about 6Mbps.

If I want to do subtitle, Do i put the subtitles file .srt with same filename of the movie file so that other can see the subtitle? I have some English speaking (e.g:. Jackie Chan movies) that might need Vietnamese subtitles for my family from overseas to watch...

I have AirvideoHD/AirVideoHD Server.

It hasn't been updated for years... I think the developers abandoned it.

Looking for suitable replacement to stream all my media to my iOS clients. I had used Plex in the past when evaluating between AirVideo and Plex, and liked Airvideo better back then.

Is Plex still relevant today? Are server code and client code being maintained and updated regularly by developers?

What do you need a reverse proxy for? Just expose the port on the router and connect via the app. I've been using it on unRAID for years with no problems.
Other services that also run on port 443. Only need to poke one hole in the firewall that way.

I've tried to do a reverse proxy over 443 with nginx on Plex with no pass. The mobile apps refuse to connect to it. But it works fine in a web browser. The mobile Android app also crashes everytime you try to enter manual connection details. I may give emby and jellyfin a try before I buy into this.
You probably have it incorrectly configured. Use nginx proxy manager, it makes things easier. I have plex along with 7 other services behind npm using pfsense split dns and wildcard ssl. Everything just works and only ever need to renew single cert.

Yes, very much so. Updates and being released all the time.

how many direct streams can one give to users over a gig internet connection (gigabit upload)? im planning on doing that in the future. no need for transcoding or anything. except idx/sub subtitles, and i cant understand why hasnt plex fixed that.
I don't imagine you will have any issues with gigabit upload. There may be some official documentation about streams vs upload speed, and recommendations. There are also quality settings that can be adjusted of course if there are any performance issues.

I guess $90 is the new $75 for this. Even at this price it's a pretty solid deal if you're running a Plex server with an Nvidia GPU. Otherwise you might want to look elsewhere for AMD support.
Works fine with the IGPU on my 5600G (AMD based).

May I ask a follow up question?

If I only do streaming (and transcoding where applicable) of my library to my iOS devices, what benefits does the lifetime license gets me, versus "free" ?

Currently, I'm streaming just within my LAN, no access from the outside, so I can't really stream when I'm outside my LAN.

Are there any annoying limits to the "free" setup where it is very much worth paying the license?

Thanks in advance!

yeah, but adjusting quality means transcoding, right? i have an athlon 200ge HTPC and it wont let me transcode a single stream, says too weak. i mustve missed a piece of configuration, because i think even a 200ge could transcode one 480p x264 stream. an 11 year old mobile i5 was able to transcode one 480p stream, i dunno whats going on and am too lazy to figure it out. so, instead of figuring things out, im moving to europe, getting a gigabit internet (same price as 250/10mbit here on spectrum) and offering direct streaming from my plex to family and friends. lol. i like things complicated, yes. haha.
