There are a lot of different models that use the small propane bottles. By the time you buy the regulator at another $50 to use a larger propane supply, a buddy bought this one [amazon.com] instead on sale (now $85.86) that mounts on a tank. It definitely puts out the heat (29,000-45,000 Btu).

In case of malfunction, that is a valid concern. Most all of the propane heaters today have an O2 depletion sensor, as well as a tilt sensor in case it gets knocked over, but still, you should have a carbon monoxide alarm and of a course, a smoke alarm that can be had in the same unit.
Even a regular house furnace can get a crack or leak in the bonnet that emits carbon monoxide, so yes, get a sensor alarm or two. Sometimes, the local fire department will have a deal, if not free. Just check around.
