The Encore has an accurate medium to coarse grind for the increasingly popular manual brew methods such as pour-over, Aeropress, Siphon and Chemex. This is good deal on a solid entry level burr grinder. Baratza has great support that helped me put a timer switch on my Encore like the Maestro Plus and Virtuoso have. Next upgrade is the M2 burr after my stock ones wear out.

Higher end grinders will have more consistency of grind size. Ideally, you want all grinds exactly the same size so they all extract evenly and you don't get over or under extracted grinds. Burr grinders are huge step up from blade grinders which bash the beans into random sized fragments.

This grinder, and even the Virtuoso, don't really provide a consistent grind at the finer settings, which is really what you need for espresso. For automatic grinders you'd probably want to start at the Sette level, which is a good bit more expensive, but that's the investment you need to make for consistent, good espresso. You could also go with manual hand grinders of which you can find some good ones for sub $200.
I don't mind shelling out for a grinder. I just one one that will last forever like an Encore, and strongly want to get it at a slickdeals-like heavy discount Wink

If you don't mind throw out some specific model numbers of espresso worthy, reliable grinders (if you know some) I promise to read up on them if you do.

Repped! My old grinder crapped out a while ago, this should be helpful!

This is also America's test kitchens picks as well.

Do you know the cheapest, most reliable grinder that will do on-point espresso grind?
Last year I picked up a 1ZPresso JX Pro hand grinder, got it for around $150 direct from Taiwan. Still blown away by its consistency and build quality. You can also get espresso quality grind from the regular JX, which is around $30 cheaper, but it has far fewer adjustment steps for dialing in your grind.

Baratza Sette 270 is very solid entry espresso auto grinder and Baratza themselves have great support and you can fairly easily swap out components or work with them if you have issues.

If you want to go another level up, a lot of people really like the Eureka Mignon. Not something I've used but I've heard is good.

If you want more professional stuff, you can look at Mazzer stuff. I think that's all $1k+ but actual coffee shops use them.

Not sure why now, but I finally pulled the trigger after eyeballing this for years and getting tired of the "same ol thing" with coffee. My first grinder. Fortunately, I have tons (at least five) of local roaster-buying options within town.

Shipping to Virginia was free.

Agreed, but you can upgrade to an M2 cone burr from Baratza for $35 + shipping which roughly gets you the Virtuoso. Still not as good as a proper espresso grinder but gets you a bit closer for relatively cheap (with cheap not really being a thing you should plan on for espresso).
I have the breville SGP. Would that setup be an upgrade?

I have this Encore grinder already. I didn't do the upgrade tip to the burr the guy mentioned in another comment but the Encore is way inconsistent and doesn't get fine enough for espresso. This is great for my aeropress and pourovers which I make probably 70% of the time. If you really want to get into espresso then unfortunately there are no 'bang for the buck' items IMO. I started with low-midlevel equipment and have regretted it. I've replaced many items and spent too much but I really like the process and size of espresso shots. I still couldn't pull the trigger on a real electric grinder for espresso but I did purchase a manual 1zpress that does a great job. It has made me back off of espresso a bit though since my morning coffee process is already complicated enough and the extra grinding for my ladys shots makes me too lazy lol

I'm slightly OCD so I love the routine of grinding, turning on electric goose neck kettle, ect. I make Aero press and v60 pourovers mostly.

Though, a manual grinder is just too much. I've heard of people attaching them to drills. Don't want to do that every morning either.

My theory is One would want the best even/fine espresso grind for aeropress too. As even as possible, and as fine as you can still push through the aeropress that is still doable. I'll figure that out within a few months.

I'm not looking to cheap out on a grinder model. I want to shell out for one that super relaible, makes fine and consistant grind. The trick isn't looking for an affordable grinder. It's finding the right high priced one, and if possible, buy that grinder during a freak sale anomaly that makes it cheap.

May I ask why this unit is not for espresso ? What then would be your recommendations for espresso needs?

Thank you.
It takes heavier duty equipment to consistently grind at the level you need for great espresso. The burrs are more heavy duty and the motors are too, among other things. If you are looking for the Baratza Encore equivalent for espresso it would be the Baratza Sette 30. I've researched on if there exists a grinder out there that can do both very well, but there just really isn't. Baratza sells a model called Vario which is supposed to be that machine, but most reviews out there aren't very great on it.

Probably not, if there's any improvement over that with the "Virutoso" it's not much and I wouldn't spend the money.

Blade grinders pulverize the beans so you get an inconsistent grind which can cause some of the coffee (the finer grains) to overcook and get bitter. It's probably more noticeable if you're doing large grains like French press which tastes awful with a blade grinder.
Interesting. Obviously, my cheap grinder has a blade. I use it for drip coffee.

This would be a deal that would obviously benefit from a taste test. Smilie I do have a feeling that the taste difference would be extemely modest to me, if perceptible at all.
