I'd you're not doing exciting stuff, then no you probably don't need this over your phone camera.

I have shot a ton of ski video on mine over the past few years. Here is an example...watch till the very end to get a unique view of a wipeout! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4tdjFE
Some of the best pictures I've eve taken (not quality, but visually) were with the 360. I'm jumping on this deal. Miss those shots and printing them out were fantastic for tiny plant effects. The 7 Pro takes good pictures but definitely not the wow effect. Combined with 360 support on google photos, it's great.
I was thinking about buying a DSLR camera for some time but 360 cameras are more exciting, and this performs well enough--I noticed that, with the editing, you can do some interesting things, such as use only one camera for two different people--take a conversation format, have people sit around it and you can edit a single camera to focus on whomever is speaking with a single device giving the appearance of multiple devices focusing on different people. That's pretty neat.
I ended up buying the X2 along with the batteries and a few other addons, as Insta360 doesn't like shipping batteries easily due to international law. The rest I purchased directly from Insta360 to save on taxes. I simply do not want to buy directly from a Chinese company and deal with an extended return process especially if something arrives broken.
Also, the Asurion insurance can be purchased for 2 or 3 years, and I opted for 2 years whereas Insta360 care is only for one year. Paid a little more, but assuming they both operate essentially the same I get another year of protection out of it.
Does anyone else feel like this new tech has only begun to be realized with what you can do with it? An enterprising group of people could even make "murder mysteries" in 360 film to figure out "whodunnit," making a game out of re-watching at multiple different reference points to see different details and put together all the facts.

My issue was/is connect to Android. (Tried several high end phones. Connect very infrequent. Also not sure about this device, but the one R require you to connect to phone to register.
Avoid or buy where you know you can return

I was going to say get it once you can get down the mountain without falling but even then, you risk cracking the lens. A gopro with a case will probably be a lot better for beginners. You can bang it around without having to worry about breaking it.
