Most likely very old grounds. That's why I don't like buying coffee from Amazon or supermarkets, they don't prioritize freshness.

If you are going to pay extra for "gourmet" coffee why would you order it pre-ground? You might as well buy Yuban ground coffee.

The bag I received early November was roasted 10/6/21

AWD has some with October roast dates for $10.

I've had okay results over the last few months getting fresh Peet's whole bean from Amazon. Recent orders have been delivered approx 3-4 weeks past roasting. Not ideal, but not horrible, especially if you're price sensitive or just can't make it to a local source.

Will get downvoted to hell for saying this, but if you're making drip or pour-over and don't add dairy/milk, pretty much all of Peet's is too dark. Try a premium brand like Equator, Olympia, Blue Bottle--heck even Stumptown--pretty much any roaster that doesn't roast their beans way past the second crack... or learn to roast your own green beans (to save $$). Grew up drinking Peet's because that's what my parents drank, and after you discover lighter (better) roasted coffees, all of Peet's coffee just tastes smokey and bitter because they roast the beans so dark that all you taste is the roast.

I recently purchased the 2-lb ground Alma de la Tierra after having had a good experience with a 2-lb whole bean bag the last time and this last bag was bad tasting. I don't usually purchase pre-ground beans since I'm a coffee fan and grinding yourself makes a big difference in taste. That being said, I'm in for the 2-lb bag of Alameda beans though, thanks for posting that - taking the risk that the expiration date isn't too far away being Amazon and all.

You must be a Californian. Blue bottle is overrated, but yeah Peet's is generally darker or more bold
