Several things to remember about the Foodsaver. ( I have had 8-10 different models)
I use both the upright and flat model currently.
First- Most people burn up the pump by sealing too many packages in a row. Pump needs to cool.
Also if have a bag that is taking too long to seal. I watch the sealing and if it seems to be take a long time I will stop and and flatten/straighten plastic or remove some food if the pouch is Tenting.

It really bothers me too to waste plastic but the pouch should have a couple inches below the seal without tenting so will lay flat easily. This will ensure a quick seal and not stress the pump laboring on and on.

That is part of the reason I use two machines. I will place one to seal then go to the other machine to make another bag (sealing the bottom) and load the next bag before going back to the one I am sealing to let it cool off. So far both my machines have lasted over 5 years. I do a lot of dual bag seals or triple bags. Seal the bottom, then turn sideways seal length wise to create a dual/triple slot bag. One slot for rice, one for sauce or gravy one for meat and veggies for example. Then just make dinner by dropping in Sous Vide bath to heat. One pouch one meal for a single person.
Food saver quality has dropped a lot, I would say a 20% failure rate. Unless I've been really unlucky.

what bags do you use - any luck with the Amazon bags which are much cheaper than Costco?
They have worked fine. They are a little thinner, but actually somewhat stretchier. So durability is a factor of both really. I've had good luck with them.

Ive had their refurb unit (as well as the original) and the game saver silver- . the refurb is the one I use daily as it is vertical. Vertical units use more bag length it seems. I am not a huge fan of these thumb operated locks (as it feels like it will crack off. ).

I just get the ones from Amazon and hasn't have any problems. I just used some roll bags from Foodsaver (old) and when got towards the end of the roll last 2 feet was all crinkled and wouldn't seal great due to wrinkles.

I got a white dolphin qh03 last year as a gift and my first vacuum sealer. I use it a lot more than I thought I would, but it lets a little air in before sealing and it's extremely sensitive to liquid - if even a tiny bit is pushed out while sealing it will not work at all.

Does anybody know if this model is a big upgrade from mine, or will I probably hit the same problems across all food savers?

Vacuum sealer noob here. Looking at purchasing my first. Does anyone else know the real world difference between this and the sams club one on sale?

Got a Foodsaver for Christmas last year. Discovered it was too much trouble making bags every time (and having to pull the device out of the cabinet, etc.).

Here's what I do to save money (and not need to buy the Foodsaver device)...buy the FoodSaver ziplock bags (they sell Quart and Gallon size) in the big box at Costco. FoodSaver just had a Buy 2, Get 2 Free Black Friday deal so I stocked up.

Now, those zipper bags have a valve in them and I noticed the vacuum attachment on my machine looked very much like my wine vacuum device I use to remove air from opened wine bottles.

As it turns out, you can absolutely use the zipper bags from FoodSaver with a device like a VacuVin [amazon.com] to pump the air out of the bags for cheap! No needing to use the machine any more (or at least very rare times I want to make my own bag).

The zipper bags are thicker and can be washed and reused (depending on what was in them).

For me, this method is more convenient since we don't have counter space to keep the FoodSaver device out all the time.

Have had my for 4 years. Have sealed 5 deer and probably 100 bags for sous vide.

Mine was a GM 2150 Wingman for $60 so the price really hasn't changed in that time.
What a horrific way for Bambi to go…sealed in a storage bag…

It doesn't matter how long the unit lasts if they stop making seals for them. I have two from almost 10 years ago that work fine, but I can't find the right seals and they are starting to get tougher to get to seal (I have to push down hard on the top to force the seal).

Just found a brand new FM5300 at a thrift store for $10. Excited to try it out using the tips in this thread! (yeah, I'm bragging. LOL)

You buy a new one after 10 years. That's $7 a year. Good price really

Seems wasteful to replace something that works fine to me. And it was supposed to be a replaceable part.

any link to the model / page to look for on the costco site? TIA.
It looks like this is the link, but it's out of stock online. The best you can do is call your local Costco(s), press the number for administration offices, then give them the item number of the vs3180 (which is on the Costco site in the link below)... then hopefully they can tell you if they have any in stock

https://www.costco.com/foodsaver-...48022.html

In the event that the page gets taken down, here's the info:
FoodSaver Multi-Use Vacuum Sealing and Food Preservation System
Item 2248298
Model vs3180
