Weight capacity is 275lb.. can any fellow bigger boys confirm the bouyancy will support our mass or will I start listing like the Costa?
I have this one and my brother in law is 325. He floats just fine in it. no issues. It's a really great kayak.
It can't be done "cheap", but it can be done "cheaper". We own four kayaks, two of which are fishing kayaks (although most of my fishing is actually taking my daughter, so we're in the "non-fishing" tandem kayak more than the fishing ones!). For them, I've bought 4x$40 paddles, 4x $40 paddling life jackets, 2x $15 milk crates w/zip tied lid, 2x $15 anchors w/paracord and a diy pvc/pool float "buoy", a couple old mayo jars with holes poked in them for a bait bucket (shrimp mostly). I use fishing gear I already had, except I added a pair of fish grippers instead of the net I use from land. In all, other than the yaks themselves, I've spent only about $400. We use them on a local creek or our river in mild whitewater and take them camping where I fish, so we get a good bit of use out of the kayaks and the gear.

Depends on the state. In Oregon, you just need to buy an invasive species/waterway access permit since it's over 8'.
In Cali you hand to register it if you put a motor on it

I have this kayak. It's a great beginner fisherman/angler yak especially for those that can't afford premium ones. It has everything you need to have a great day out on the water. I'm 175lbs and I load about 50lbs worth of gear on it and have no issues treading. Because it's a kayak you can get into extremely shallow areas vs other boats. The must upgrade is the uncomfortable seat. I used a stadium seat in its place which lifts me up a few inches. Great price too bc I paid 225 shipped from a local guy in my area.

For anyone who hasn't been following kayak prices, used kayaks are selling at a premium. Honestly you could flip this in the spring and make a sold $100 if there is a market for such in your area. No brainer imo

A reason to find a lake in between.

Anyone with experience of how this handles waves on a big lake or ocean?
You'll be fine on the Ocean don't listen to the naysayers.

Is this a good beginner kayak? I've rented kayaks a couple times, but I know almost nothing about different kinds of kayaks. I just wants something to leisurely paddle up and down local rivers and lakes. Doubt I'll ever fish from it.

Is this a good general purpose kayak, or are there better styles or better values for my basic needs?

I'd like to get something like this, or an inflatable, but my main concern would be the panic if I flipped or fell out, and then couldn't back into it. I guess I'd have to stay close enough to shore to swim/tow it back.

This is great deal on starter kayak. I got mine at Walmart 4(?) years ago. I have been looking at upgrading past couple years but this keeps getting the job done so I haven't.

This would be difficult to stand in even for a lightweight as the insides are all curved. I couldn't imagine taking it on ocean but I am used to small lakes / big ponds. It doesn't track great, I've worn my arms out getting across windy lakes a few times but that's what it's all about Smilie. With my 250lb plus gear I have a little water coming through the scupper holes but have never felt unsafe- I haven't ever tipped it even.

I highly recommend getting a stadium/bleacher seat to sit on. It makes the thing 100x more comfortable and increases the amount of time you can stay on the water. Here is link to the 17" seat I got on Amazon (picture looks different and I only payed approx $45 though)

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EJRKIMA/

I would search around for a cheaper one.

Also lots of great videos on YouTube about equipping/ modding these.

I purchased this kayak several years ago from Sams. It's a good kayak with a great warranty. It had lived outside and the hatch cover and seat / backrest had deteriorated over time. I gave them a call to order new parts and they replaced all of the replaceable parts at no cost. The Lifetime brand means something to me now. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase another Lifetime product.
