Thanks got one for backup...Was concerned about it not being an 80 plus bronz, silver, gold, or platinum regarding energy usage but can't beat $15 for a 500 watt psu..

Forgive my ignorance, I haven't dealt with Pc power supplies in years. Is this an ATX power supply? I've got some extra car speakers and was thinking about making a radio for the garage.
yup this is atx. not sure why it's not listed anywhere.

My living room PC is pushing 9 years on its PSU, what are the signs I should replace before explosion?
PC crashing, not powering on, boot loops, fried components, etc. if you're waiting for signs. or you could proactively swap out your power supply before it craps. the best of the best have 10-12 year warranties.

Typically, you'll smell a hint of smoke which will become more apparent. Then you'll see a small orange glow inside your PC which most people call fire. Cool

I have several pc more than 10 years old. Had one psu broken probably caused by some motherboard short circuit. And it won't power on. I would say most psu are very solid. Other parts of your pc are more likely to break first.

For $15 this should be a great PSU for most of the non-gaming home PCs. I probably will buy it to start a new desktop build if I don't have 2 laptops already.

Even though they say, "be dumb, buy smart", for $15, it really can't go wrong.
I don't think anyone will buy these and try to push it to the limit.

It isn't really surprising that a $15 power supply from Thermaltake isn't considered top tier on an enthusiast site, but if you really do just need a basic power supply to replace one that has failed in an older system that uses a standard ATX PSU, I don't see any reason to think these would be "dangerous" to you or your computer.

According to the LTT PSU Tier list it is a "Tier D" right next to cheap bronze units from EVGA and the very common Seasonic SS-ET series. I have been using "refurbished" Seasonic SS-350ET power supplies as replacements in PCs for 5-6 years and I can't recall any failures (let alone any component damage). Some of them have been plugging away in budget low-power gaming builds for 5+ years (two I can think of are Lenovo desktops, both running an Ivy Bridge i5 and GTX 750 Ti). If that earns it a "D", I'd say "D" is probably fine for most people.

I wouldn't normally recommend a Thermaltake PSU at all... the "TR2" units from back in the day were so common and so crappy, yet they sold them for years. But if you've got a PC that's worth $100 used on ebay and you need to replace the 10 year old no-name OEM unit, I think this would be suitable, even if it had a low wattage GPU thrown in for light gaming (750 ti, 1050 ti, 1650, etc.). If you get called to fix stuff like this from time to time, you could keep a couple on hand for emergencies at least. I don't think I'd base a new from-scratch budget build around one though.

One sign is intermittent problems or problems that are hard to track down. But sometimes the damage is already done. Like a bad PSU damaging a mb.

Good to replace failed PSU on older PC. Anyone building a serious gaming PC doesn't need to be told this wouldn't be the best choice.
