Isn't this normally $179?
Having used Roku, FireTV and Chromecast, Apple TV is far and away superior. It's the difference between an iPad and a Fire tablet. Sure, the fire tablet is nice for 1/5 the price, but it's slow, jittery, packed with junk, etc.

Personally I think the last gen 4k is the sweet spot except the touchpad remote is a little wonky for most.
Harsh critics! It's a good price if you need an Apple TV today. Also, the Costco backing with warranty and customer satisfaction are an extra plus.

Thanks for the heads up! I had a $45 giftcard from trading in a couple old Echo devices and really wanted this to setup on my Roku TV (not a fan of the Roku TV OS)
How did you get credit that can be spent on any Amazon product by trading in an Echo device? I usually just get credit to purchase another Echo

They give you a gift card you can use for anything. Normally you'd use the gift card with the 25% off for trading in old devices but I just didnt' really like or use the ones I had.

I have Apple TV 4K (2017) and Shield TV (2019). Both have their strengths. I love tvOS over Android. Plex is a crap shoot on Shield where as my Apple TV never fails. But Shield allows full bitstream lossless audio output so when I want to play a movie full blast, I'll choose Shield. If I HAD to pick one over the other, I'd go Apple for reliability and ease of interface. Plus, Google has the potential to put ads on the Shield front page.

Edit: forgot to add, apple had 64Gb + $50 GC for $200 last week. I know… time machine… but for perspective, that was technically the better deal.
I have nvidia shield. Can you explain what settings to do for full bitstream lossless audio output? TIA

Other than the remote what are the advantages of purchasing this if you have the previous Apple TV 4k already?
HDMI 2.1 and audio to HomePods if you have them.

New improved Siri Remote. Many reviews suggest this is the best reason to buy/upgrade. In for 2!
Can't you buy the remote for 1/3 the price and use on the 1st Gen Apple TV 4K? If that's the case and the best reason to upgrade, doesn't it make more sense than to spend an additional $100?

I'm loving my Apple TV 4K 1st gen A1842 from Walmart for $80. Have not found a reason to want to spend more than that. Although Apple products generally cost more due to being a more refined, smooth and nice set up experience, I can't understand why they would charge more than 5x more than a Fire TV Stick w/WiFi 6. Personally the only reason I gravitated to it was for the iTunes extras that I just can't access through the Apple TV app on any other streaming device. I'm going to try Apple Arcade now that I have a free 6mo trial from Target.
If your previous gen Apple TV is still working well, that's great news for folks investing in a newer one. Thanks for the feedback .

Every Apple TV 4K 2021 thread people come in here with the following responses:

- $150-160 - you are paying that for a streaming device hahahah!

- My Roku/Firestick/Google Chromecast is just as good - no reason to get this

- Just bought the 1st gen for $100 this isnt worth the extra $50-60!!

When will people understand that you get what you pay for. The Roku/Firestick/Chromecast are not even in the same stratosphere as the Apple TV is terms of speed / streaming quality - it's no contest. If you only stream a few hours a week or dont care about using a laggy, unreliable device stick with the aforementioned devices then stick with those devices

Only device that comes close is the Nvidia Shield Pro and that is nearly the same price (or higher) and has ads and other unsightly UI elements not to mention is not as user friendly as the Apple TV. If you need superior Plex or app side loading get the Shield, everyone else get the Apple TV 4K.

As for those who are saying if the 2nd generation is an upgrade over the 1st. Apple charges $60 for just the remote - this is a $50 difference over the sale price of the 1st gen ($100).

You also get a decently faster browsing experience and here is the important thing - for people with OLED TVs the 2nd generation is the only way to go - helps mitigate the 1st gen's issues with lightened blacks and screen flickering. If you have an OLED this is the only model of Apple TV you should buy.

For 99% of consumers out there, this is the best streaming device bar none. So stop hating because it's an Apple device and actually try it out. If you can sit there and say that using the Apple TV is no different than using a Firestick or a Roku device than you are either blind or blissfully ignorant of the massive speed/UI improvements.

Enjoy

Nonsense. I stream heavily all the time with a Roku and occasionally FireTV (when I need VPN) and they work perfectly well. I think Apple TV's are very nice, but no reason to stomp on everyone else. Especially after Roku licensed AirPlay. This is a good deal for a premium-priced product, but the competition is pretty mature as well.

Pretty sure it's just in the Shield audio settings. I set that up 2-years ago and forgot where it is. Might have to toggle something in Plex settings too. Of course, you'll need a Lossless audio source and receiver to play it on.

A Ford Focus works just as well as a Mercedes to drive to the grocery store.

But if you want a smoother more refined ride you choose the Mercedes.

Roku/Fire TV are painfully slow when compared with the Apple TV, that's just a fact

If the speed / streaming quality doesnt matter to you, what about the UI?

Roku/Fire TV/Chromecast is like visiting a spam site without an ad blocker - Apple's UI is simple and clean. Only the apps you use, even can put them in folders.

Apple TV also allows you to "exit/close" apps with a swipe up on the remote - if an app freezes on the Roku/FireTV/Chromecast you have to do a soft reset/restart/unplug the device to continue to stream. Google is working on implementing the same feature as people have complained about unplugging their Chromecast when an app freezes, but as far as I know has not.

Apple TV also allows you to "multi-task" and switch from app to app without going back to the home screen using an app switcher found on Apple/Android phones

My 60+ old non-tech savvy mom can notice a difference in ease of use and speed between her Google Chromecast and her 1st gen Apple TV

Not slamming the other devices just trying to show the average buyer that yes there is a huge difference and that all those comparing a lower end budget device to the best device on the market are very wrong

Slightly off topic, does anyone still use AppleTV 3rd gen? Does mirroring still work with latest 15 iOS update? I bought one off of eBay to use strictly for the iPad mirroring feature, but when I got it, everything works except the mirroring part lol…
