Personally I think the last gen 4k is the sweet spot except the touchpad remote is a little wonky for most.

Edit: forgot to add, apple had 64Gb + $50 GC for $200 last week. I know… time machine… but for perspective, that was technically the better deal.

- $150-160 - you are paying that for a streaming device hahahah!
- My Roku/Firestick/Google Chromecast is just as good - no reason to get this
- Just bought the 1st gen for $100 this isnt worth the extra $50-60!!
When will people understand that you get what you pay for. The Roku/Firestick/Chromecast are not even in the same stratosphere as the Apple TV is terms of speed / streaming quality - it's no contest. If you only stream a few hours a week or dont care about using a laggy, unreliable device stick with the aforementioned devices then stick with those devices
Only device that comes close is the Nvidia Shield Pro and that is nearly the same price (or higher) and has ads and other unsightly UI elements not to mention is not as user friendly as the Apple TV. If you need superior Plex or app side loading get the Shield, everyone else get the Apple TV 4K.
As for those who are saying if the 2nd generation is an upgrade over the 1st. Apple charges $60 for just the remote - this is a $50 difference over the sale price of the 1st gen ($100).
You also get a decently faster browsing experience and here is the important thing - for people with OLED TVs the 2nd generation is the only way to go - helps mitigate the 1st gen's issues with lightened blacks and screen flickering. If you have an OLED this is the only model of Apple TV you should buy.
For 99% of consumers out there, this is the best streaming device bar none. So stop hating because it's an Apple device and actually try it out. If you can sit there and say that using the Apple TV is no different than using a Firestick or a Roku device than you are either blind or blissfully ignorant of the massive speed/UI improvements.
Enjoy

But if you want a smoother more refined ride you choose the Mercedes.
Roku/Fire TV are painfully slow when compared with the Apple TV, that's just a fact
If the speed / streaming quality doesnt matter to you, what about the UI?
Roku/Fire TV/Chromecast is like visiting a spam site without an ad blocker - Apple's UI is simple and clean. Only the apps you use, even can put them in folders.
Apple TV also allows you to "exit/close" apps with a swipe up on the remote - if an app freezes on the Roku/FireTV/Chromecast you have to do a soft reset/restart/unplug the device to continue to stream. Google is working on implementing the same feature as people have complained about unplugging their Chromecast when an app freezes, but as far as I know has not.
Apple TV also allows you to "multi-task" and switch from app to app without going back to the home screen using an app switcher found on Apple/Android phones
My 60+ old non-tech savvy mom can notice a difference in ease of use and speed between her Google Chromecast and her 1st gen Apple TV
Not slamming the other devices just trying to show the average buyer that yes there is a huge difference and that all those comparing a lower end budget device to the best device on the market are very wrong
