Isn't this normally $179?
Having used Roku, FireTV and Chromecast, Apple TV is far and away superior. It's the difference between an iPad and a Fire tablet. Sure, the fire tablet is nice for 1/5 the price, but it's slow, jittery, packed with junk, etc.

Personally I think the last gen 4k is the sweet spot except the touchpad remote is a little wonky for most.
Harsh critics! It's a good price if you need an Apple TV today. Also, the Costco backing with warranty and customer satisfaction are an extra plus.

Amazon price matched. You can do pickup at Amazon locker for additional $10 off. Plus 5% back with Amazon visa. Very solid deal, I'd go with Amazon now. Not sure why someone downvoted, must be Costco employee.

You forget about using Nvidia Shield with AI that enhances upscales images.

From a specification standpoint, it's a mixed bag here. The Shield TV Pro is using the latest NVIDIA Tegra X1+, but the Apple TV 4K (2021) does not use the latest Apple chipset. Instead, Apple opted for the A12 Bionic, which launched back in 2018 alongside the iPhone XS. That doesn't mean that the A12 is a slouch, it's just kind of surprising to see Apple using outdated internals for its latest streaming device.

Apple gains the edge when you look at onboard storage, as you can opt for either 32GB or 64GB. But that's it. As soon as the storage is filled up with games, apps, movies, or other content, you'll be relegated to deleting some things. Meanwhile, the Shield TV Pro sports just 16GB of onboard storage, but it can be expanded thanks to the dual USB 3.0 ports on the side. This means that you can use one of the best external drives for the Shield TV Pro and really beef up the storage. With this ability, you'll be able to use the Shield TV Pro as a Plex Media Server, which gives it another advantage over the Apple TV 4K if you have a massive library of content.
No offense but you're basically describing the 15 year android/apple debate. I've never used 32gb of storage on my Apple TV's, ever, don't truly care about upscaling and I've never wanted to use it as a Plex server. As the original comment said, and I've used them all too and was a giant roku fan. Apple TV is best, if you want to do things that are "outside the box" go shield. But again as just a streaming box, the Apple TV to me is far superior.

A Ford Focus works just as well as a Mercedes to drive to the grocery store.

But if you want a smoother more refined ride you choose the Mercedes.

Roku/Fire TV are painfully slow when compared with the Apple TV, that's just a fact

If the speed / streaming quality doesnt matter to you, what about the UI?

Roku/Fire TV/Chromecast is like visiting a spam site without an ad blocker - Apple's UI is simple and clean. Only the apps you use, even can put them in folders.

Apple TV also allows you to "exit/close" apps with a swipe up on the remote - if an app freezes on the Roku/FireTV/Chromecast you have to do a soft reset/restart/unplug the device to continue to stream. Google is working on implementing the same feature as people have complained about unplugging their Chromecast when an app freezes, but as far as I know has not.

Apple TV also allows you to "multi-task" and switch from app to app without going back to the home screen using an app switcher found on Apple/Android phones

My 60+ old non-tech savvy mom can notice a difference in ease of use and speed between her Google Chromecast and her 1st gen Apple TV

Not slamming the other devices just trying to show the average buyer that yes there is a huge difference and that all those comparing a lower end budget device to the best device on the market are very wrong
I'm very familiar with Apple TV. Newer top end Rokus are much more powerful than they used to be, though. Chromecast and FireTVs are weak (but allow VPN client apps), but newer Rokus are pretty swift, except of course for poorly coded apps like Turner's. Yes Apple's app switching is better than others, absolutely. It's perfectly fine to be happy with it — it's a great device. Enjoy. But it's also perfectly valid to think it's way overpriced. Which is subjective. 🤷 ♂️

Other than the remote what are the advantages of purchasing this if you have the previous Apple TV 4k already?
None honestly, I bought one because I wanted both another box for my house and the new remote for our main room. Made more sense to go new one, but last gen is probably best for the money

I have Apple TV+ subscription (watch those shows on my computer). Is there anything this device does that my smart tv with apps (netflix, hulu, disney+, etc.) doesn't do? I already have an ethernet connection on my tv so I don't have speed issues. In general, why do people use Roku and similar streaming devices? Are they for TVs that don't have internet-connected apps? Thanks.

The user experience and AV quality are going to be much better, as is support for additional apps. It's the equivalent of using a sound bar or HT speakers versus your TV's internal speakers.

It's all about the user interface, having everything in one place with app icons you can move around just like on an Apple phone (which I don't use btw). I have the previous gen of Apple TV 4K and I love it, and am thinking about buying this one just to have things load faster/smoother than before. The screensavers are even awesome, and often when they pop up we just stand in front of the TV to watch them -- 4K footage of cities/landscapes around the world.

Once you use one of these, you'll start to wonder how you ever went without one.

You can find cars with smooth rides that are not in the Mercedes price range tho. There's also a wide lineup of Fire TV products, the HD version is known to be painfully slow, whereas the Fire TV Stick 4K Max approaches the Cube 2 speed [wp.com] for a mere $35 as opposed to $150 for this Apple TV product. Having owned 4 Fire TV Stick 4K 2018 model's and the Apple TV 4K 1st Gen, I can tell you there's not enough in speed/smoothness to justify spending the extra cash on the Apple TV alone. The interface of the Fire TV Stick can be a little nicer as well in some regards and you don't have to deal with the understanding of long presses, swipes, etc like you do with the Apple remote. Some of the Ads yield $5 Amazon video credit rewards for watching 30 second clips and aren't all annoying. Are both products good? Absolutely. Am I going to pay 5x the price for a product for a minor reduction in smoothness when I hit a pot hole? Nope. When you buy a Mercedes, you're partially paying for a name which sometimes doesn't live up to the price and can be seen more as status symbol.

I bought a last gen Apple TV to access iTunes extras for the digital movies I own when the 1st Gen was available through Walmart.com for $80 a few months back. If you're not buying digital movies, I don't see the need for this device for this price unless you like Apple Arcade or being part of the Apple ecosystem, you can have the screensaver display pictures from your iCloud photo album, play Apple Arcade, Apple Music, there's a bunch of Apple stuff. If you're not tied to the ecosystem or don't care to take advantage of it, not a electronics nerd, etc., save yourself some cash and buy something cheaper or go with the built in apps.
