Data-only plan for kid

Hi, folks! I would like to let my kid start playing Pokemon Go with my phone once I get a new one in the next few weeks. Problem is kid is 9 and I do not want kid to be able to make phone calls, text, etc. I literally want a data-only plan for the phone that will be kept in a cupboard unless we go out to play Pokemon Go together. So I can't imagine I would need more than 1GB a month or something. But I don't want to spend a bunch of money just to play a silly game once or twice a week. I am really struggling to find a good option and could use some help. The phone I want to use is a Moto X4 (unlocked).
Is there some kind of pay-as-you-go plan that would be better? Or should I try to use my phone as a hotspot or something? (I don't currently have data on my Republic Wireless plan, but I would be willing to add some if that would be the easiest/cheapest solution.) Thank you for any help you can provide!
