Clearly they don't value customers. I guess I just avoided a year of frustrations in one shot. Don't fall for their platitudes on here.
update
BoostMobileCS followed up with me via DM. While thanking me for pointing the issues out and without offering apologies, they stated that Boost Mobile did not 'accept' the charge and it should fall off my account. This is why it is very rare for me to use my checking debit card for shopping. Otherwise they were polite and attentive in DM.

Porting was a huge pain - had to go to a store and even that guy had problems. They have different dealer support for the old T-mobile network and the new AT&T network. Everything is in India and it sounded like they were pretty tightly constrained to stick to a script. They were totally unprepared for troubleshooting a failed port-in. I spent over an hour on it at home and the store guy spent about an hour on it as well. But it works now. It does appear to be using the AT&T tower.
For the second kid, we're going to get a new number because she uses google voice for everything. Hopefully, it will go more smoothly. I noticed that the purchase screen was a little different this week vs last week. Now it asks at purchase whether you're porting or getting a new number. Last time they didn't ask until activation. Maybe this helps them sort things out somehow. Anyway, fingers crossed!

The very fact that they can't produce a working web form and handle billing issues with "just file a chargeback with your CC" should tell you all you need to know.
