Can't really describe it. I owned a bunch of premium laptops and nothing really compares to the Thinkpad.

I currently own an Alienware x15 r1 but I owned other generation Alienwares too, Razer blades, Lenovo legions, asuses, you name it.

I always return to the Thinkpad. There's something about the balance that they nail perfectly.

If the laptop is just sitting on the desk, almost every other laptop is better but if you hold it on your lap on a couch or on the bed, Thinkpad has everyone beat.

performance on the Thinkpad is worse than the competition at this price but that's not what they're aiming for

Looks like a nice machine but a bit too rich for my blood. :/

I owned X1 extreme gen 2 (OLED version, 4K touch screen). I loved the laptop but had to sell it for half of what I paid.

1. It gets hot on the lap.
2. Battery life is horrible. Yes, I have done all mods under the sun to improve it.

If I am looking for a laptop that sits on the desk all the time, I'd buy it or this. But, I want to sometimes sit on my couch and spend time with family in the living room while reviewing some stuff. I ended up buying LG Gram 17 inch and, so far liking it.

Battery life in this new model has improved - battery is up to 90 Wh (from 80).

I am a thinkpad fanboy. I have prob owned 10 of them through the years, used mainly for software engineering. While the specs on this looks amazing, the P1 and X1 line has crap battery life.

I think it would help if they switched to lower power AMD chips

Typing on the older P1 Gen 3 OLED version right now. This machine is a beast. Unsure if the newer IPS is comparable but I love this thing mostly because of the display. The Lenovo logo when I turn this thing on is really really Red. Pre Color calibrated too with x-rite/Pantone

To those who say this is a brick compared to the X1 yoga… it's slightly heavier but still thin. I used the X1 before. The power brick is heavier and external (rectangle charge port) and you can't use a basic USB-C adapter to charge like Yoga. The bottom gets hotter but as a desktop replacement, it's super thin and light. I used to use HP ProBooks too and these newer desktop replacements are nothing like those either.
I have an integrated graphics version of the X1 Extreme (I don't need the GPU, and my company paid for it, so no complaints there). X1E G4 and P1 G4 can take USB-C up to 95 Wh. I haven't tried it yet.

Those times MAY be very conservative. I ordered a CTO X1 Carbon Gen 9 on Cyber monday(that urlhasbeenblocked 15% cashback was too high to ignore) and said it would ship in 3+ months. It shipped in 3 weeks. No way to know before hand.

I barely game, if at all. Legion rear ports are better for me since I'm at a desk with monitor connections etc. Performance still seems better as you mentioned with TDP, higher refresh (which truly minimizes headaches and dizziness scrolling, moving windows). Just don't see the point of these unless track point or looks swings for you. The track point is the one thing I love about T or Pseries.
Thinkpads have the benefit of a long support cycle and dedicated support separate from the consumer machines (confirmed by my experience as I have had to call for both a Legion 5 Pro and an old P51). Much of the repair can be done yourself with the excellent blown up diagrams available online. The thinner ones do have soldered parts (DC jack, memory), but most everything else is modular. There is also the spill-resistant chassis with the weeping holes underneath, etc.

Lenovo needs to create a workstation line thats separate from the Thinkpads...maybe revive the old WorkPad moniker from the 90s? LMAO

But no way are they going to improve the thermals of these chassis while keeping that bento-boxesque design.

I would say if its only photo/video/design/music works, no gaming at all. Go for the macbook pro for sure.
At this level (workstation-class machines), it's the software and hardware that determines which computer to get, not the other way around. But in the Windows world, a Thinkpad is a good, safe choice.

i got $151.92 from a popular cash back site. so that made the purchase price $2055.67(including tax)-$151.92=1903.75 out the door. Still pretty hefty price to pay but better than $2055.67.

Struggling to see difference between this and legion 7i. Aside from looks, rtx 30 config seem like a better deal on legion...more for your buck. If you need 4k, then Pseries is only option.
Build quality is a major difference (in addition to weight). The legions have their hinges glued to the rear cover, which makes it easy to come apart. The Thinkpads still use traditional screws.

Don't forget that ThinkPads used to be made by IBM before they sold it to Chinese owned Lenovo. I've owned Lenovo's in the past, and they're extremely competitive with price and features, but cannot in good conscience any longer support Chinese companies.

Agreed. The fact that Asus has been building highly rated AMD with dGPU gamer laptops with very good battery life (like the ROG Zephyrus G14 and G15) shows that it's possible. The G14/15 also do not run full wattage through the GPU but apparently performance is still quite good even with a relative light laptop (under 4lb for the G14 and about 4.5lb for the G15). If we had that but in a Thinkpad motif (style, ports, keyboard, trackpoint), I would gladly pay a premium for that. That's what I can't understand about PC laptops, they can't seem to build a laptop with great processing/graphics horsepower, good battery life AND good aesthetics. Apple has been doing this for years…
