"Pollan keeps you turning the pages . . . cleareyed and assured." —New York Times

A #1 New York Times Bestseller, New York Times Book Review 10 Best Books of 2018, and
New York Times Notable Book

A brilliant and brave investigation into the medical and scientific revolution taking place around psychedelic drugs--and the spellbinding story of his own life-changing psychedelic experiences

When Michael Pollan set out to research how LSD and psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) are being used to provide relief to people suffering from difficult-to-treat conditions such as depression, addiction and anxiety, he did not intend to write what is undoubtedly his most personal book. But upon discovering how these remarkable substances are improving the lives not only of the mentally ill but also of healthy people coming to grips with the challenges of everyday life, he decided to explore the landscape of the mind in the first person as well as the third. Thus began a singular adventure into various altered states of consciousness, along with a dive deep into both the latest brain science and the thriving underground community of psychedelic therapists. Pollan sifts the historical record to separate the truth about these mysterious drugs from the myths that have surrounded them since the 1960s, when a handful of psychedelic evangelists inadvertently catalyzed a powerful backlash against what was then a promising field of research.

A unique and elegant blend of science, memoir, travel writing, history, and medicine, How to Change Your Mind is a triumph of participatory journalism. By turns dazzling and edifying, it is the gripping account of a journey to an exciting and unexpected new frontier in our understanding of the mind, the self, and our place in the world. The true subject of Pollan's "mental travelogue" is not just psychedelic drugs but also the eternal puzzle of human consciousness and how, in a world that offers us both suffering and joy, we can do our best to be fully present and find meaning in our lives.

Alternate titles:
  • "I took drugs and I wrote this book to make people think I did it for academic reasons"
  • "My drug dealer told me to write this to promote his product"
  • "Enabling drug abuse and other New Age trends I won't let die"
Funny and all, but conventional medicine disperses opioids like candy and America is fine with it. What if there is an alternative that works (under doctor's care)

We really do need more awareness around this topic. Psychedelics have saved so many close people I know on the brink of (and in deep) depression, that it feels unreal (almost) on how we, as a society, have suppressed them from safe access.

What's more frustrating is, we suppressed it for political reasons 60 years ago, even that for needing to have more "control" on citizens, which is a stain on democracy and free will. Unfortunately, most rest of the countries just followed stronger nations' decisions in the past like sheep.

Now, here we are having made so little progress on understanding how these ancient plants work that we continue to be eternally dependent on the pharmaceutical concoctions that even the most scholar physiatrist doesn't have a clue on "how" these anti-💩 drugs are supposed to work, or which one among the plethora works really.

Anyways, I think that our human society needs a reform, for the sake of safeguarding our mental health — Psychedelics are absolutely the cure for Opiod-addiction and different ones are known to resolve different mental illnesses, including but not limited to depression, anxiety, PTSD, phobia, addiction, etc.

It's important now more than ever, as the world is getting faster and faster, that we have the utmost clarity to become mentally stronger than we ever were, to just survive. Psychedelics are survival tools for us and as theories go, they might have been the root for evolving our past animal brains into what we've today!

So always ask this important question, do we really know the truth? or did we grow up never questioning a societal decision of the past generations?

My wife was diagnosed with brain cancer in October, at times she can be in excruciating pain. The pain management doctor said use tylenol or maybe one ibuprofen. Trying to get any opioid for pain relief is like pulling teeth. Wish I could find a candy store to help her. The hospital told me to call hospice, she likely only has months to live, will it really matter if she is an addict? There is a war on opioids for medical use, however fentanyl comes across the southern border like water over niagra falls, it just doesn't make any sense

So how does one go about getting this? Is there a legal route- through a dr or hospital setting? I've been reading much lately about how it is helpful. DH suffers from severe depression and anxiety. Anti-depressants don't help him and neither does therapy.

I'm sorry to hear this. Suffering caused by incurable pain is just too harsh of a situation to be in. I don't think anyone else who's not in your shoes will understand what you're really going through.

In this case, opioids do seem like the necessary evil, as long as they help manage the pain and even temporarily reduce suffering for someone who's already going through.

There are ways in which psychedelics can help though (in Canada):

No real legal way to get hold of them, unfortunately — which is why we need stigma-shifting awareness.

MEASURE 109: Oregon Psilocybin Services Act [ballotpedia.org]

Quote :
Oregon Measure 109, the Psilocybin Program Initiative was on the ballot in Oregon as an initiated state statute on November 3, 2020. It was approved.

A "yes" vote supported authorizing the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) to create a program to permit licensed service providers to administer psilocybin-producing mushroom and fungi products to individuals 21 years of age or older.

For the mental issues: Find the cause first, and try to remove that. What is the source, why do people get depressed, or do they get obsessed first then depressed. Sure there are genetic reasons for some, but there are also psychological causes that develop over time. Find the source & cause first or we will keep chasing our tails.

This book and author are fantastic. This author was successful before writing about this.. nobody dares talk about positive effects of drugs because of fear or naivety. The stigma is an illusion. His other works can help you with your physical health and nutritional awareness too. Great deal, buy the ticket.

If you're the type of person to scoff at this book, then you really should consider reading it. It may... change your mind.
