I was in SF recently. Don't be an idiot and you'll be fine. If you bring a car leave your stuff at your hotel or rental. I didn't see individuals being robbed in broad daylight. I was walking down the Embarcadero alone at night near Oracle Park and I didn't run into any problems.

Unlike most fake cities in America where it's really a suburb with a semi dead central business district, locals actually hang out around the city so there are usually other people there to avoid being truly alone in the city. Certain neighborhoods like Tenderloin are rough and should be avoided at night, especially the areas that have not seen gentrification.

The amount of hysteria over store robberies among people who don't live there or haven't been there is incredible. Not that I'm saying it's not a problem (it is), but I don't understand the leap you have to take from rising shop lifting to thinking that as a tourist you'll be shot over your wallet at any corner.

Based on what these people would say it would sound like literally no sane person hangs out in SF. My experience was the opposite. Yes, there are a lot of homeless people, especially in some parts where it's really bad, but there were a ton of people living their normal lives and it was great seeing people actually living in a city, unlike most American "cities" I've visited.
I am 99% sure you would not say this if you live here.

One city by the bay full of shit-filled streets, to another city full of palm trees and meth, filled homeless encampments. California paradise at its finest...

We are beyond screwed in this state.

That's cause all the red states send their homeless people on a one way ticket to California instead of fixing the problem at home.

Living in the Bay Area for 30+ years If you have not been to SF in the past 10 don't. The city has always been a mess but as of late its pretty insane. The whole city smells like piss and that's no exaggeration. Worst drivers in America. Parking is sparse at best and if you do find a garage its usually about $30-40. I would recommend visiting all the surrounding areas and skipping sf entirely. Berkeley, Sausalito, Tiburon, Halfmoon bay, Santa cruz are all worth the trip.

Grew up in SF then moved to alamo, SF is the same as it always was, there are a lot of homeless, it's expensive to park (which is why you take muni/bart to get around,) and it's packed with people. Anybody who says SF has bad drivers has never been somewhere with bad drivers or they are timid (aka drive in their rear view.) If I was going to avoid somewhere its Berkeley unless you're going to a show at the greek, zachs or chez panisse.

Berkeley is so much better than SF in every way.

My last SF trip was in 2019 and I was ok too but that does not guarantee all visitors will be safe. I would not set foot in SF for many years to come unless I have to.

Your advice to leave stuff at the hotel means nothing. They now break car windows at random just to check if there's anything worth stealing. Crooks know there's little to no consequences to their actions.

Not saying people actually like homelessness and rising crime there. Honestly, if things don't improve in either department, I can see more people leaving, especially those who are either renting or want to cash in on the ludicrous housing market there. I personally wouldn't want to spend an exorbitant amount of money for a house in a city where I'd worry about my stuff being stolen on a daily basis. I was just pointing out how the streets aren't flooded with the homeless and armed robbers like the person before me was implying. The city actually has residents and other tourists walking around most of the places the average tourist will visit. If you're not an idiot, you can navigate through SF as a tourist just fine. Living there is a different story.
