A fine book to pick up and read but ultimately a let down as a complete and cohesive story.

Love Murakami, but this one is near the bottom.

Norwegian Wood, Kafka on the Shore, and Wind Up Bird Chronicle are where I would start in order of least to most weird.
It's worth noting that while this is released as one book in the US, it was released in three volumes in Japan. So you should probably think of it more like a trilogy.
Imo. The last half of the book is a letdown. I feel the whole ending cheaped out on what everything was leading up to.

Sort of like GOT last season... Except not on that level.

It's a total slog. But at least it is up for one award:

I read this only because it was the inspiration for Cloudkicker's "Subsume" album. It was my first and only Murakami. It did not make me want to seek out the rest of his oevre. But hey, if it made Ben Sharp happy that makes me happy.

If i can buy it with no-rush balance, sure why not. But for me, Norwegian Wood and Wind-up Clock bird did not have memorable endings. It got weird andI don't recall what happened. Or they were open-ended.

This is one book where it's almost better to get it as an e-book. Trying to carry a physical edition around is so cumbersome that you'll probably never find yourself taking it anywhere.

The hardcover was sitting on my shelf since the day of release. I read most of book one and just found it very… inconvenient when I hit a couple of chapters that were weaker and paused for… how many years? But recently picked up the ebook and am happy to have made my way through it.

E-Ink for long fiction it's the medium/tech at it's best. Also love digital annotation and search.

This seems like the only one of his books that has been discounted so much in recent memory. It's a shame.

Weird book, but I found it interesting and good. Definitely not gonna be for everyone though.
This is every Murakami book, except the running book.

I felt the exact opposite. A big book just feels so good as a hardcover, and provides a sort of sense of accomplishment plopping back on your shelf. Also, a good candidate for taking somewhere without electricity if you want double-digit hours of electronics-free distraction. I have the hardcover of this book. 1q84 was my first exposure to Murakami, and have since read Kafka on the shore and Hard boiled wonderland.

What's your favorite book? I might skip this zamboni and shell out reg price for his best shorter book if I knew what it was. He wrote a lot of books.

1q84
I didn't realize it was weird when I started. He gets weird. And the "erotic" bits are something between funny and uncomfortable. Hard boiled wonderland is pretty good though.

I read this over December - it's a long read (1184 pages paperback nod) but I thought it was worthwhile.

I read this, and was disappointed. The story never went anywhere. There were a lot of interesting threads, but they didn't really tie together. And there was really no conclusion.

Murakami is fantastic and well worth reading, but this is not where to start, as I found it read like the work of an author who's gotten too big to be beholden to any editorial advice. Like his muse Kafka, short stories are a strength, and I'd recommend starting there.

I actually read this book and forgot I read it until I saw it here on SD so it must not be good if I can't remember it.
