Its not that the promo gift card won't work, it's that it can not be used on a "sale" item, If you are buying something that is full price, you can use the gift card promo.

I bought into a similar giftcard deal in like September, with the promo cards expiring at the end of December, surely id find a good deal during the winter holidays? Nope. Not a single Ultraboost under $100 during that period that I found. In the past you could sometimes get decent colorways for $70-$80 but its been bad lately.
Personally id recommend people skip this deal, as adidas.com has pretty high prices, and typically bad sales. They have better deals on their ebay store. So unless you expect to pay MSRP for a newly launched item, youll find prices better elsewhere
