A little tip for people who have never used glass jars. NEVER take a jar that is boiling hot and plunge it into very cold water to cool it down. It will shatter the glass. Instead use warm water to cool it down so the glass doesn't expand/shrink too fast and shatter.

It's not that the glass is expanding/shrinking (it is a little) but it is more of the vacuum created by the melting ice that makes it collapse it into itself.

Half Pint, 1 pint, One & Half Pint (single jar) and 1 Quart.
They are the best food storage device for refrigerator and freezer.
Refrigerator
Any type of leftover food from meals that will fit.
Also left over canned vegetables or fruits/liquids
Seal much better than any kind of plastic / lid on the market.
Freezer
I make 5 pound slow cook / crock pot Roast Beef or Pork Roasts.
When we have 4 plus eating, left overs minimal / frig.
Kids all grow up now, so just my wife and I.
Still make the slow cook 5 pound roasts.
After we have our meal I bring out my 1 pint jars and fill up
approximately half full of meat, then top off with broth, leaving about 1 inch
air space top of jar (allow for freeze expansion). The meat / broth are still very warm, lid it up. This allows the food to vacuum pack. Hour or two later put them in a freezer.
The leftovers will fill up about six-1 pint jars. Storage life is month or as long as you feel comfortable. We have never had a storage issue after a number of months.
Reduces the degree of freezer burn .. Read on ...see why.
Freezer to table / meals.
Take a jar(s) out in the morning so it can thaw out for late afternoon meal.
Once you pop off the vacuum lid ... first take a fork or butter knife and gently remove
any liquid fats that have floated to the top...which have converted to a wax-like plug (also aids in jar sealing) (and freezer burn) which you can easily
pop out of jar and discard. Easy way to dramatically reduce calories and have no negative effect of the taste.
Serving
For wife and I - 1 pint jar is a nice light meal.
I heat (on oven burner) the meat and broth to almost boiling. In a glass add a mixture of corn starch / water and stir. Slowly add mixture / stir into meat and gravy to preferred texture. Put over the top of mash potatoes or sliced bread.
It taste as good as the day I made it fresh in the crock pot.
Serving size suggestions.
For my wife and myself 1 pint jar works fine.
1 pint - Hungry young adult can enjoy a large meal after 2nd shift job / 10 pm.
When my brother stops in and I ask if wants to have Roast Beef and gravy meal
with us (he always says yes) I use two-1 pint jars.
Use a combination of jars and / or sizes to store your food ... whichever works
for your family size or individual meal needs.
