Cat 5e and 6 will run gigabit. Check the writing on the cable in your box if you can, it'll be marked. If it's 5e, you can save a few bucks on patch cords.
So meaning to say if my house run on cat5e.. I can just purchase cat5e cables and its capable for gigabit with a cheaper price
While certainly out of spec, I am running 10G off of cat5e runs. No perceived issues. Most runs were made myself and patches are a mix of out of box and self made. Not saying I do not have any cat6, but it was too much to warrant a complete rerun based on performance I got.
