Silver investors: bars $2.09 over spot from Monument Metals $832.68

One of the cheapest online stores I've found: Kilo bars starting at $2.09 over spot. Shot/grain at $1.99 over.

Paid a bit less the other week for the Germania Mint bar, but that's the luck of the draw when available cash == market/opportunity (I'm usually on the wrong end of stick, unfortunately).

Simple, online CHECK check-out, back-ordered item came early (projected 2/11 :S), well packaged & tracked. Would definitely do again.

Quote from Dudeskis :
These bars are best for elderly people trying to prevent taxation of their estate when they pass. My grandfather spent the last 15 years of his life slowly liquidating his assets in to gold coinage. When he passed no one but my uncle knew where all the coins were and he and his siblings, who trusted him, met and I assume divided it up. I'll be doing the same thing when I'm older.

This. Probably illegal (to not claim it), but honestly good advice. Best way to obfuscate a wealth transfer besides literal cash, but then you risk it getting hammered with inflation.

Of course it requires a tremendous amount of trust, and the whole family probably shouldn't all sell it all at once. Does the IRS $600 rule come into play

Just my two cents here:

My dad bought some silver in the late 70s...wouldn't sell it as the price soared to over $50/ounce when the Hunt brothers tried to corner the market...said he didn't want to pay taxes. Oops!

Price is 50% lower over 40 years later...no dividends either.

Meanwhile, the stock market is up 30x, and even buying and rolling 3-month CDs would have probably given you 3x your money.

Warren Buffett may be a "dinosaur", but there is a reason he's avoided precious metals his whole life.
There is no reason to not make precious metals a small part of your investment. Stocks are worth nothing of SHTF. 1-10% of your investment into metals is reasonable IMO, which is what I do.

All true. The key fact precious metal investors seem to always discount is the supply half. When PM prices rise, mining activity picks up. Marginal plays become profitable. On-the-edge mines open up. The price of PMs is therefore self-correcting. This has played out time and time again.

Last time I checked these are tough to digest. If things got that bad you couldn't give me a pallet of them for one egg laying hen.

When you inherit PMs it's not federally taxed. Only when you sell, captial gains kicks in and state income tax. Depending on the PM, like Eagles, you don't have to fill out a 1099 at the store when you sell. There are different strategies for inheritance, a house for example could be a better asset if your state allows for the original cost basis to be inherited.

The time I ordered from them, they shipped USPS. Would definitely have preferred FedEx.
I'd prefer USPS. Fedex is crap.

Never understood the mentality of silverbugs. If society degrades to the point where you're bartering with slivers of precious metal you'd be better off buying and training with an AR-15

I never see metals as an "investment" per se but as a store of value.
Right now the folks in DC are wrecking the value of the dollar (not an accident)
If the dollar ceases to be global currency then you are Argentina
In a SHTF scenario having food, medicine etc is better to barter with etc.
But some metals are wise
I knew a guy who made millions on gold in the 80s and bought lots of real estate that he still owns and went up a lot.
Saying the stock market is way up over 30 years hides the busts (and the current bubble is due). I knew a lot of crushed people in 2008 and it came close to being worse. People had epic stability the last 75 years but the tread is wearing off that tire

How does one convert a silver bar to cash in the private market? Are there dealers, banks, individuals that bid on them?
Short term, you won't make any money on these at all. Silver would have to go up what, $2.35 per oz just to break even and that doesn't even count having to convert them into cash like you mentioned.

Long term, a pawn shop would be your quickest cash in for these unless you know a precious metals dealer.

There is money to be made in precious metals but you're going to be losing out more not investing in the market after the correction finishes which is happening right now.
