Book details & reviews:
  • Winner of the Pulitzer Prize
  • "A masterwork . . . the novel astonishes with its inventiveness . . . it is nothing less than a grand comic fugue."—The New York Times Book Review
  • A Confederacy of Dunces is an American comic masterpiece. John Kennedy Toole's hero, one Ignatius J. Reilly, is "huge, obese, fractious, fastidious, a latter-day Gargantua, a Don Quixote of the French Quarter. His story bursts with wholly original characters, denizens of New Orleans' lower depths, incredibly true-to-life dialogue, and the zaniest series of high and low comic adventures" (Henry Kisor, Chicago Sun-Times).

Similar story for me. If not for his grieving mother who made it her life's mission to get this published, I doubt anyone would have read this novel. More on this at https://www.newyorker.com/books/s...-of-dunces.
My pyloric valve. If you at all enjoyed this book (I certainly did) you should read butterfly in the typewriter.

This is my favorite book.

It is divisive. Some rate this book as top tier 5 star literature. Most think it's boring.

I adore this book so hard.

Got it free with expiring credits. First time I read it was around 40 years ago & then it seemed so outdated, but whatever.

my highschool english teacher said this was one of his favorite books of all time. i tried to read it then and couldnt get through it. then i tried to read it again in my 30s. i made it further, but it was still a slog and didn't finish it. honestly, given how precious time is (as you get older) if im not hooked in the first 100 pages, i pass.

I have to agree that I don't get what all the fuss is about. I couldn't get through it. It's rare I quit on a book but this one....

The same guy who told me about Idiocracy also loaned me this book. Loved the film, one of my favorites Started the book, but found it too silly to finish. Maybe that's the point of absurd humor.

I really enjoyed the book as I knew people with many of the characters same traits.
I kept picturing people I knew when I read the book, which made it even more funny, and sad for that matter.
Then thinking about the author's poor mother trying to get the book published for so many years after his suicide is just tragic.

Try being on the descending opinion on "Cryptonomicon" - you say something bad about that and within a week your "a" key stops working on your keyboard. Big Grin

-- reading about "A Confederacy of Dunces", I wasn't able to find any real problems with the book being controversial in any way. It sounds like people who are just looking for something to be upset about.

I adore this book but recommend it on audio. The man who performed it did such a great job bringing it to life.
