"A masterwork . . . the novel astonishes with its inventiveness . . . it is nothing less than a grand comic fugue."—The New York Times Book Review
A Confederacy of Dunces is an American comic masterpiece. John Kennedy Toole's hero, one Ignatius J. Reilly, is "huge, obese, fractious, fastidious, a latter-day Gargantua, a Don Quixote of the French Quarter. His story bursts with wholly original characters, denizens of New Orleans' lower depths, incredibly true-to-life dialogue, and the zaniest series of high and low comic adventures" (Henry Kisor,
Chicago Sun-Times).

It is divisive. Some rate this book as top tier 5 star literature. Most think it's boring.
I adore this book so hard.

I kept picturing people I knew when I read the book, which made it even more funny, and sad for that matter.
Then thinking about the author's poor mother trying to get the book published for so many years after his suicide is just tragic.

Try being on the descending opinion on "Cryptonomicon" - you say something bad about that and within a week your "a" key stops working on your keyboard.
-- reading about "A Confederacy of Dunces", I wasn't able to find any real problems with the book being controversial in any way. It sounds like people who are just looking for something to be upset about.
