Best bang for your buck if you are looking for a receiver that can do 4k 120Hz HDR 10-bit. You need 40Gbps bandwidth for that and if you are stuck on the old TSR 700 model Costco was selling you will be limited to 60Hz..

This might not be a big deal to many, but someone that is specifically looking for that capabilities, all the receivers are in the 700-800+ range for entry level stuff, so to have one that can do it in the $500 range is phenomenal, even though the brand ins Onkyo and is not favored as well by many die hard audiophiles.

Imo, this is a great buy, and I am someone who has spent about $15,000 on my home theater system. It's not right for me since I do 7.2.4 surround, but for someone maybe looking for high end audio in a normal family room, not like a dedicated home theater room, this is basically an awesome deal, and to have the security and backing of Costco to buy it from is even better, imo.
Go and educate yourself instead of spreading old information as if it's current. Onkyo WAS in a period of insolvency through no fault of their own. Several years ago, Onkyo's former parent company Gibson (yes, the guitars) went on a wild spending spree that forced them (Gibson) into bankruptcy and in the process left Onkyo high and dry without funding. Since Onkyo is too valuable of a company to just let die off, they were acquired late last year by a joint venture of Voxx (which owns the Klipsch brand), and Sharp Electronics. Financially, Onkyo is doing just fine now. Welcome to the year 2022.
If I understand it correctly, this would not be able to output 5.1.4 correct? What budget receivers are there that people know of that can?

So why would it matter if a 24fps movie is played through a hdmi 2.1 receiver vs a HDMI 1.4 receiver if both are going to a 120Hz TV? A receiver shouldn't be able to "upscale" the 24hz to 120 any better than a good 120Hz TV can.
You answered your own question.

Well, the HDMI issues started with the TX SR804 IIRC. A beast of a unit, too.
Actually the HDMI issues started with the XX5 series..( 705, 805,875,905)

Wonderful units for the price when they worked.....ran VERY hot
My 875 was fixed under warranty...and I sold it not too long after

I have the receiver plugged into TV HDMI 2. When I plug in the directv box, it changes the TV to HDMI 1 and says there is no signal. I tried changing the HDMI back to HDMI 2 but it doesn't like it. So, I unplugged the directv, changed the receiver HDMI in to HDMI 1 on the TV. After plugging in the DirecTV again it comes up no signal and change the input on the TV to HDMI 4 this time. After that I gave up.

I looked on line for help but really couldn't fine any. No one was having this issue.
On a newer Direct Tv box you can turn off HDMI control

But to your point CEC control can be buggy with the right( or perhaps) combination of brands

In my experience with Sony and Samsung TVs paired with Yamaha receivers..it will turn on but when you try to turn it off the Yamaha receiver has to be turned off separately

How's the compare to the Yamaha from Costco
One difference is that Yamaha (TS700/V6A) only has front presence/overhead/upshot while Onkyo can do front/middle/rear for the Atmos .2 speakers. This is quite critical to me because I bought a house with 7 speakers installed in the wall with the middle and the rear pretty far from the front pairs.

The other difference is that Onkyo has the chromecast built-in although this is probably no biggy. I would guess anyone has a few of these sitting around ( I have three).

Hope it helps.

Power per channel output is higher on the Onkyo also... some other differences, but I can't remember them. There are extensive threads on this since it has come and gone multiple times, as well as the Denon. General consensus has been that this is the better unit, if you don't have an aversion to Onkyo.

life time.
source: retired the TSR 700 over 1 year later as they never worked out the HDMI 2.1 issue (at least when i returned it)
They now have kind of worked out the HDMI 2.1 issue. The TSR-700 now comes with a 2.1 board and they will replace the older version boards for free (I did it). The problem is that the new 2.1 board is lower spec than a full board and only is capable of 24gbps throughput as compared to a full board at 48gbps. While neither the PS5 or XSX utilize 48gbps they do use more than 24. This ends up meaning you get a slightly lower color space (YUV420 instead of YUV 422).

I didn't realize this until after I sent my Yamaha off for 2 weeks for board replacement. Ended up going back to my previous setup of just connecting directly to my LG CX and using eARC to the AVR. Ultimately doesn't really make any difference at all.

There is a really good reason why movies aren't shot in 120fps... while it would look great on a native 120hz TV, everything would look it was played back in half speed on a 60hz TV. It would be unwatchable on about 75-80% of all TVs today lol.
LOL how did you come up with that? This is actually the EASIEST scenario to play back with out issue. You simply decimate (drop) intermediate frames and play at 60Hz. No issues no "half speed"

Correct, Atmos setup is going to cost you much more. Perhaps an older model can be had for cheap but not anything close to this.

For anyone going between this one and the Denon, I have owned and used both for extended times. In my experience the Onkyo has been far superior, in performance and reliability (specifically I had numerous issues with the Denon and its HDMI switching).
