Best bang for your buck if you are looking for a receiver that can do 4k 120Hz HDR 10-bit. You need 40Gbps bandwidth for that and if you are stuck on the old TSR 700 model Costco was selling you will be limited to 60Hz..

This might not be a big deal to many, but someone that is specifically looking for that capabilities, all the receivers are in the 700-800+ range for entry level stuff, so to have one that can do it in the $500 range is phenomenal, even though the brand ins Onkyo and is not favored as well by many die hard audiophiles.

Imo, this is a great buy, and I am someone who has spent about $15,000 on my home theater system. It's not right for me since I do 7.2.4 surround, but for someone maybe looking for high end audio in a normal family room, not like a dedicated home theater room, this is basically an awesome deal, and to have the security and backing of Costco to buy it from is even better, imo.
Go and educate yourself instead of spreading old information as if it's current. Onkyo WAS in a period of insolvency through no fault of their own. Several years ago, Onkyo's former parent company Gibson (yes, the guitars) went on a wild spending spree that forced them (Gibson) into bankruptcy and in the process left Onkyo high and dry without funding. Since Onkyo is too valuable of a company to just let die off, they were acquired late last year by a joint venture of Voxx (which owns the Klipsch brand), and Sharp Electronics. Financially, Onkyo is doing just fine now. Welcome to the year 2022.
If I understand it correctly, this would not be able to output 5.1.4 correct? What budget receivers are there that people know of that can?

LOL how did you come up with that? This is actually the EASIEST scenario to play back with out issue. You simply decimate (drop) intermediate frames and play at 60Hz. No issues no "half speed"
I stand corrected. Almost all TVs should have the ability to drop frames. I was thinking too much about film techniques (using high frame rate to create slow motion effects). I think the real reason why 120hz isn't used as much is because it might make movies look too realistic because people are used to 24fps in traditional cinema.

Correct, it will not. I don't think you will find a sub $500 reciever that can do this, there is only so much they can fit. If this is important for you, spend the extra $
My denon from last year I paid $400 for does 5.1.4 did prices go up because of high inflation?

For anyone going between this one and the Denon, I have owned and used both for extended times. In my experience the Onkyo has been far superior, in performance and reliability (specifically I had numerous issues with the Denon and its HDMI switching).
Weird I've had awful luck with onkyo and would never buy anything made by them again but great luck with denon. No issues with their products and sound fantastic. Guess it's luck of the draw maybe.

This costs $1000?
The person I was quoting was saying, my Yamaha does not really support the HDMI 2.1 and you may need that in the future. I was saying I do not care about the HDMI 2.1, I don't need it right now and if I have too, in the future, I'll buy a different receiver, it's not like we are paying over $1,000 for these receivers today (the Yamaha, Denon, and Onkyo). I fine these receivers very cheap.

What's the advantage of having dual HDMI outputs? I just got the Yamaha TSR-700 Costco deal from a couple weeks ago but I'm not a gamer. Thanks in advance for any comments.

I feel your pain. I had a 515 and 616 both go out prematurely. First their hdmi boards went out then both would not longer output sound on any source

I have a 676 working pretty well now, but I'm still leery. I'll be in the market in the next couple months for an additional receiver and this new one is definitely a contender

If the Yamaha had dual HDMI outputs, I'd probably go with that based on previous experience

I wish I could buy onkyo again.... bargain for money. But heat issues and hdmi issues on 2 units in the past forcing me to move towards denon.
Almost same thing here. Was a huge Onkyo fan and thought the failures I repaired for people were flukes. Kept upgrading myself, with 4 units, many through the Onkyo trade in program. But after the last 2 of my own had HDMI issues, finally game up. Failure is not a fluke thing, but is common.

Made the switch to Yamaha TSR-700 a year ago. Was not in stock with Costco deal, so instead bought the Denon AVR-S750H for same price. Of course the Yamaha came back in stock the next day, so ordered that as well. Tested them side by side for a week and returned the Denon. The Yamaha is an all around better unit, especially the sound quality. Just got it back from free and painless HDMI 2.1 board exchange. I mainly use it for 4k HDR Atmos movies (Chromecast, Roku, Plex) as well as PC gaming with an RTX 3090.

This Onkyo is stellar! Coming from a 6 or 7 year old every-level Denon receiver means I'm finally experiencing fast HDMI switching, amazing sounds from my JBL 530s and 520C. I'm trying to tell myself I don't need to upgrade my old, puny Monoprice HTiaB subwoofer because the sound I hear now are already so amazing, but I think I'll probably end up doing so relatively soon. The Amazon Echo and Google integration are awesome with this receiver, and the phono input is just stellar!!! It's an actual joy listening to vinyls using this receiver and our linear tracking turntable!

This thread so far, literally:

"I gave up on Onkyo/Denon/Yamaha, and I find Onkyo/Denon/Yamaha to be better." None of these receivers are perfect. The BEST receiver for you is not the BEST receiver for others. Get both receivers (or all 3) from Costco, compare them at home, keep the best one that works for you. And for those of you still holding a grudge against Onkyo for the bad HDMI boards that they extended the warranty for and fixed, Onkyo has moved on, and their products over the last several years are no worse than their competitors.

I bought the Yamaha because at the time, it was in stock. And I will say, the sound is outrageously GREAT!! I play movies through the Roku, with Plex. And I cannot say enough about how it sounds.

I'm not into all of the other stuff with HDMI 2.1, I'm not a gamer, I bought it for movie playing only.

Only problem I ran into is with DirecTV Streaming box. Blu-Ray and Roku hooked up without a problem. But the DirecTV box will NOT hook up properly. I had to run the box straight to the TV, then Optimal sound to the receiver. But the DirecTV box would not hook up to my old Yamaha receiver either. I'm going to call DirecTV this weekend to get help with it.
I don't have direct TV but I guess you're just trying to run left and right 2 channel sound from it?

I've had tremendous luck with Onkyo over 15+ years. Two receivers that have been solid with not one issue. Sorry for people who have had issues.

Even if you have to bypass the receiver, you should be able to run the audio over ARC (Audio return Channel) so you can get sound without the optical cable.
