On the contrary. I'm getting into homelab(s) and have heard this product recommended before. To make this assumption is just naïve.

(Again, not pointing a finger at you or anyone, simply generalizing.)

Why would that sort of assumption be naïve on slickdeals? As people ask questions equivalent to, 'can a toaster fry chicken', all the time on this forum. I'm just implying that adding a bit more detail would dismiss any assumption towards ignorance (if that truly were the case).

As for using it in a. 'Home Lab' setup? I think this would make a great rack-mount router for the beginner or someone that wants a fairly easy setup right out of the box. The more advanced user looking to run an ISP out of their apartment is going to want something a bit more robust though (different hardware altogether). You might even want to look at the 'edge router' line of devices instead as they are a bit more advanced (more CLI focused etc.).

Then comes the problem with the edge line, it needs a refresh! I've been rocking my ER4 for a few years now and I think the only other edge product was the out of my price range infinity model.

It all boils down to how dirty you want to get your hands with that lab. If you want to get really dirty and go with the UDM? You may find yourself regretting the purchase for something a bit more advanced later.

For the routing and firewall yes. But the UDM SE also does wireless network controller, voice over IP posting, security camera recording and building/home security. If you take all that away, I would use pfSense over ubiquity any day of the week. It is all that other stuff that makes this a good purchase IF you need that. If not, pfSense (or Untangle, that have a $5 home license now)
You have a link for that untangle deal? Currently use OPNsense but wouldn't mind trying out untangle

Maybe he made a typo and forgot the 0? The cheapest home basic license is $50/year.

They appear to have a NG Firewall (community edition) for free? I'm not certain as I've never used Untangled before but heard good things.

I have used Unifi and PfSense and am looking for a middle ground in terms of ease of use vs performance / features.

Is there a comparable solution or mix of products that would do what this does better, particularly from a different company or mix of companies like Ruckus, Cisco ($$$$), Fortinet, etc?
Get a four core computer with two NICs and install Sophos XG Home. Really powerful and free for home use. Limited to four cores and 6 gb RAM.

I meant five bucks a month, and yes if you haven't tried untangled but you have used PF sense, do yourself a favor and give it a test run. I have found its layout to be very well done and relatively bug free LOL.

Definitely do. Like they said you have a free version that will absolutely give you a real taste of it. I mean you can use it just like that but I like the VPN and advance filtering plus they're DHCP GUI is as good as it gets. Don't mean to sound like a salesman

Currently VPN doesn't work unless you remove some Windows updates. It's not an "out of the box" solution unless you like to tinker and use it at home.
The Feb Win10 CU fixes the VPN issue.

Opnsense, openwrt, all free with a PC. Sophos does very similar too. all have pros and cons. It is up to what you need

It has two 10g ports (one is for the WAN) that can also handle slower speeds. The ideal use of this system in the integrated 1gb POE ports would be for cameras while the 10gb uplink would go into a switch (10gb or whatever).

I have had this unit running for about two months now. Love it. Next to zero maintenance since it replaced my udm and key. I like that it just works.... the more you have the less I want to worry about and this did that for me.
This is a "dream" machine it's supposed to be an all-in-one. At $500, I expect a device where I don't need to buy an additional switch. 8 ports is enough for most users since many use wifi. However, people buying this tend to be more tech savvy and would need at LEAST 8 ports. At this price I'm better off buying the router and switch separately and it'll be a cheaper option.

Ahh... $50/year isn't bad still, but I guess I'll throw it on a VM to tinker with.

This is indeed a Dream machine, because the value here is incredible. In one box, you've got a router with IPS/IDS that supports up to 10Gbps thru SFP+, 8 ports of PoE switch, and NVR w/included SSD. All in a 1U form factor.

This replaces 3 separate boxes that I use now: UniFi USG, 8-port 60W PoE switch and NVR box.

I've been waiting for this to come back in stock and pulled the trigger without a second thought.

Untangle no longer does $5 per month. It's $50 per year, no monthly option anymore.

Edit: just saw someone else already mentioned it. Lol

Hmmm do I need this?

Moving into a new house and planning on running ethernet for POE Cams on the exterior of the house.
You're going to need a PoE Switch, and some other stuff. All in I think you'll need around another 1k dollars if you wanted to go unify and some APs to create a nice overlapping wifi network to accompany the dream machine. Could it be done for cheaper? sure.. but I think this is a decent 'plug and play' solution.

This definitely isn't worth it if you wanted just PoE (that is entirely separate anyways), or routing. The real power of this unit comes when you want the routing. You want the gateway. Firewall features. Getting the AP units. Maybe even the unify cameras.

If I plan to move to the UniFi ecosystem, is this what I want to start with? Seems like an awful lot of eggs in one basket. I currently have all home-built solutions running Untangle and Proxmox and don't mind something complicated. I need something more capable on the wi-fi arena (google mesh is convenient but only for users, not admins).
