Recommend you pay for Pro if you can afford it, it sounds from one of the reddit posts like they're taking a beating of a usage spike due to the Russian situation and they're still contacting people directly on there to get them setup with free service if they need it. This is pretty typical behavior for these guys, and I think it should be rewarded.
I bought a lifetime sub back when they were really small (small enough that a lifetime subscription was a risk) and that has paid for itself 100x. Days like today I feel a bit guilty not contributing to support them, but I do recommend them to friends strongly.

Good things about them - as a VPN they clearly take the goal of having a VPN, privacy, very seriously. And actually care, not only as an advertising gimmick. It should be a given, but obviously these days there are a lot of behind the scenes pressures put on anything like this to give in for "good reasons" like law enforcement. Anywhere you buy VPN service from you end up having to blindly trust to resist those pressures, unfortunately. But things like providing a completely open source VPN client kinda helps with earning my trust. It's not like most people give a shit or can even understand the code, so it's obviously not a big selling point. But even if you can't read the code, you should know that having an open source client is a hallmark of taking security seriously.

As for downsides, I haven't used competitors in a few years but when I did the competition had a larger selection of locations and higher speeds sometimes. Not sure if that's still true, probably is still for locations but probably not the speeds, I never have issues with bandwidth using them. In the past they were slow at fixing problems when discovered, but they would always clearly be working hard on fixing things the right way rather than the quick way. Some features have taken a long time to be released/updated, but network and security problems were clearly dealt with as an emergency. The last year they've added a bunch of features that are amazing and, again, clearly designed to make the service great for even the niche users. For example I use a (free for pro) feature that creates a temporary port that I can use to connect network services (e.g. FTP) through without exposing my IP. They offer for an additional monthly cost a static IP where you can reserve a permanent port number. It can be clunky to use a temporary port, but when I looked into the details more I realized that realistically this is the only way to solve the need for port forwarding without unintentionally sacrificing anonymity. They could have simply not allowed any port forwarding or have gone the lazy way and allow binding your account to a permanent port, but instead they do it the right way with real privacy in mind.
Also, naturally as they've gotten bigger they've gotten much faster at fixing issues when they happen.

Also they write funny posts with serious topics. I've seen people complain they're cringey / 'hello fellow kids' kinda... and yeah, they are, but they're obviously aware of that and play into it too. The jokes and puns are definitely eye rolling, but hell I'd rather have that than the cold corporate husks or complete lack of communication from "big" VPNs

Here's a recent blog they posed that was news to me and does not bode well for VPNs and privacy: https://blog.windscribe.com/is-pr...vpn-world/

Ok that is a lot of shilling for them so I'll call it. Hopefully the shilling will relieve some of my guilt for not giving them more money lol
Note - this is consistent with you subscribing to their email newsletter, which can get annoying at times. If you unsubscribe you lose the free bandwidth. Be sure to set up a filter if you don't want to deal with the bombardment of spam.
According to the reddit link in the OP, this code is intended for those in Ukraine/Russia who are impacted by censorship and state controls. Kudos to windscribe for stepping up. Personally, I'm going to pass on using the code.

"Share this with your friends or family who are in Ukraine or Russia."

I also have the lifetime deal and it's been awesome. They have a healthy list of servers now.

My one gripe with them is their incredibly slow openvpn protocol. IIRC they don't support wireguard at all and their ikev2 can't be setup on a synology.

I have a very niche example but they run fabulous as a desktop app

Edit - I just double checked windscribe openvpn cert on my synology which has DSM 7 supporting openvpn 2.4.9 newest standard. I'm topping out at 10MBps. My full bandwidth is roughly 50 MBps, which the desktop ikev2 app has no problem.

I thought they implemented wireguard? I read something about it recently but not very carefully. Here is what I found real quick from 2 years ago: https://blog.windscribe.com/intro...1670700a6/

Heads up:
When I run their Windows app concurrently with Serviio DLNA media server (service) it spikes the CPU usage to 100% and stays there until I shut down Serviio.
Based on my research, there is no remedy to this problem.
It sounds like the same thing related to Plex media server and some other applications. Do you get this warning when you start Windscribe?

What's the deal with old life time warranty? Do we need to connect them to renew it in case if it expires?

I'm unable to enter the code (on mobile). The "Have a voucher?" text just acts like plain text when I click it in Chrome, both in a regular tab and in an incognito tab. Same with DuckDuckGo. I normally run ad blocking (Blokada), but it's disabled. Anyone else run into this issue?

I bought Windscribe's free lifetime sub long time ago (for some reason they claim to expire in 2027 in their user interface), but haven't used it much because their servers to Taiwan and Japan were (and still) insanely slow (to the point page loads and streaming timed out) and the US servers bandwidth wasn't that good either (it's now acceptable, but still not great). I ended up buying FastestVPN's lifetime sub a few months ago which filled in the gap to Asia's servers but their US server bandwidth is a bit worse than Windscribe. I'm seriously considering paying again to get Surfshark if it's faster.

Also, I suspect a large number of Windscribe and FastestVPN's IP pool are marked by Google and many places as potential spammers and abusers so I had to do one of those stupid 'are you a human' challenges even when I'm trying to search something on Google. This is something to keep in mind.

Me too. From a slick deal a few years ago. Windscribe is awesome!
I got mine from the BATKA420 code a while back. Have a pro sub now, but I still keep my array of 50GB accounts around in case I need them.

Is there a way to get the 50GB free account still? Creating an account, verifying email, and adding this code just got me 30GB.
No, all the codes expired a while back. This is the only code that works right now. The last 50GB code to date is the BATKA420 one, and that one doesn't work anymore. Youll have to wait and see if another code comes up.

If you're a Reddit user, subscribe to r/Windscribe. I think SDers might have missed out on the aforementioned code because it wasn't ever posted here, but I found it on their sub. It's a good idea to keep an eye on that sub if you're looking for free bandwidth upgrade codes.

I'm using OpenVPN 2.4.7 on an Ubuntu docker container to connect to Windscribe, and I get about 50mbps parallel.

I've used a few different commercial VPN services and you pretty much get captchas to make sure you're not a bot with all of them.

I travel a lot and was getting sick of having to do captchas so much to access websites in the US, so I ended up using my EDU email for a free Azure subscription and created my own VPN server (100% free). You can also create your own VPN at home using a raspberry pi or an old computer to have access to your home IP address while you're abroad.

A commercial VPN is still needed if you want to stream content from other regions, but for general web surfing, having your own server is so much better and can be had for free or a few bucks a month if you pay for a server rental. There are lots of good YT videos out there showing you how to get everything set up and it's very easy as long as you have basic tech skills.

apparently, I've had an account since 2017 and it has 60GB so this code would lower it lol. I'd bet it's from an old slick deal
