At this price, buy 2. For an easy backup solution, (non critical) I just copy my 24/7 version every few months to the other copy I have unused and sitting in the drawer and then put it back in the drawer. When the 24/7 one "breaks" I will just pull out the copy and start using it, and buy another "drawer copy"

Which reminds me...
I have the 4TB version, shucked it and it's been running 24/7 for about 2 years. Fingers crossed!

Of course, YMMV.

The western digital deal was better yesterday. That being said due to the fact of having multiple Seagate consumer grade drives failing on me. My last WD that partially failed lasted me 7 years. I had multiple Seagate drives fail on me within luckily the one year warranty period but the data could not be recovered. One of the replacements failed within a year and couldn't be replaced due to the fact that the warranty period is a rolling period from when you bought it. Should be illegal. Pay the extra and get m.2. Just don't go with consumer grade Seagate. (I didn't invest in Seagate due to the fact). Lol
Get an M.2? To use as an external hard drive? Umm... Am I missing something here?

i had shucked 3 of these into my server as warm storage and they've been running well for well over 2 years.. got them about same price back then from amazon.

These are the biggest 2.5" 5tb SATA drives you can get. they use very little power and my server only takes 2.5"

these are SMR so they are painfully slow in writing...but once everything is written (took a few days to write 5tb) i have no problem reading from them.

You can get an external case for an m.2 SSD. It won't be as fast as it would be plugged directly into a gen 4 motherboard, but it'll be faster than a mechanical HDD or even a sata SSD. I haven't used it much and don't have test numbers for you, but this is the one I have: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08FWRZ9D9

I got the WD 5TB deal from Best Buy last week for $95 but am not familiar with drives. Supposedly the WD is not shuckable but this Seagate one is, which is better for recovery. Is it worth returning the unopened WD to get the Seagate over the shuckable issue alone?
Most HDD failure is mechanical, so being shuckable wouldn't matter.

In the slim chance that there is an issue with the cases electronics (USB to SATA interface), shucking would allow you to connect the bare drive to you PC to extract the data.

If the data is important enough to back up, it may make sense for you to use 2 drives that you could rotate though. All drives fail, its just a matter of time.

If there's one electrical component I wouldn't trust refurbished, it's mechanical HDD's. They're delicate, prone to failure, and hold valuable data, and you're going to go with a unit that already had issues and had to be repaired? I don't think so.
I learned this the hard way years ago. Never again! Also I never buy bare drives from Newegg.

It won't be the only copy of the data on it, so I guess I'll risk keeping the WD one. Just wasn't sure if I was upping my risk or losing value so thanks for the clarity.

I got this from Costco, and it failed within 5 months. Others have reported failures as well within a short time. Not worth it! The only thing good about this HDD is, that it will warn you for some time with a clicking/clacking sound that it is going to fail.

I got this drive on Black Friday when it was the same price. It comes with 4 months of Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom Photographer Package for free. I already subscribe to Adobe PS/LR, so the $40 in monthly savings dropped it to a hard to beat price.

It's a nice drive- I use it for off-site photo storage, in addition to my 2 on-site backup storage for my photography business. Something cheap and easy to use.

It may come down to if you bought it in store or online. Typically they'll do a price adjustment within 30 days of purchase through Costco.com
