I don't post very often. Don't flame me to bad.

I was looking through the Lowes website and found this on clearance. Showed 2 in stock at my local store. Good price on a Z-Wave outlet. Looks like in store only though.

The cheapest UL listed zwave light switch is $27+ on amazon. At $15 this is a bargain. I just bought 6 light switches and 2 dimmers.

If you roll Home Assistant as your hub you can create a locally controlled system joining all kinds of connected devices. No cloud processing necessary.
Linux setups further localized security as well.

Z-wave is a separate frequency band so it's not like your devices are on wifi or anything. Your zwave controller is probably on a networked device so unless q-anon is sitting outside of your house in a van your devices are basically as safe as the rest of your network (which is way better than most wifi "smart" devices imho).

Have to agree.

Those of us that have experience in security have long recognized the Z-Wave protocol as long-term stable. Hopefully there's more overlap with the Linux community in current inflationary destabilization.

Would not bother. If it stops working, or does not work as it should or there is a new zwave version or a new protocol you will need to change. Better use an eyesore
You don't need to change…zwave is backwards compatible

Why bother with a receptacle and not just a z wave plug? You wouldn't need any installation and it would be easy to replace. Is it purely for cosmetic reason?
Receptacles build the coverage web. I can't remember if the plugs do that.

For outdoor to fit in a waterproof outlet cover. Last time I searched, none of the outdoor plug works as a repeater. I don't know why they didn't include that, but only option for me in real outlet.

And for security purpose, it's much easier for someone to access a wifi sweep jammer that disable all wifi connection and the security system.
So, I prefer z-wave over zigbee or wifi (It's possible to jam z-wave but less likely people will do so)
The old GE dongle ones sure do, and I'd suspect the currently Jasco labeled would then as well. I just looked at my hops the other day and I definitely had a device bridging off of it.

New zwave versions are backwards compatible by design - I have some zwave devices that I bought at RadioShack, back when RadioShack was still a store, that have moved with me.

Anything that is AC powered is a ZWave repeater, it's part of the standard…. Only time you may see something not doing this is some cheap Chinese crap that doesn't actually adhere to the standard, but Amazon doesn't fact-check their eBay style garbage, so there's tons 😉

Tested one of the dimmers in home assistant yesterday. Couldn't get it to add very easily, and never did get it in secure mode. Also limited functionality for smart bulbs, and scenes due to just the one button exposing itself for use unlike an Inovelli with up down, double, triple taps, etc. Worked fine if care about on, off control of dumb lights if can get to pair with secure mode. I'll probably keep the outlets.
