I can't see anything it can do, that a $40 OBDll scan tool can't do.

you can't see it because OP didn't copy paste the complete details and you're only going off of what the OP pasted.

"Seven system support including engine, transmission, SRS, ABS, suspension, chassis, body control"

click the link in the post and you'll see that quote in the product details further down.

OP, yes, this is a good tool to help you diagnose issues with your vehicle, get 2nd opinions on what your mechanic says, and get live stats on your vehicles to stay on top of their mechanical conditions.

It's a good price too.

This is a good deal, seeing as they sell their stuff on aliexpress around the same price range. This one comes with the famous costco warranty.

Just as an FYI, this is a pay as you go business model. "Pick four from 28" those are the free ones, if you want any more functionality you have to pay them and by default give your personal info that they will sell to data companies. Just to be clear, out of 28 features, you have to pay even more money to use 24 of those. Also other features like programming ecu, but also pay extra for that optional feature. Kind of like buying a car and have to pay extra if you want to use the seat AND the steering wheel. Pick 4 out of 28 but if you didn't pick the brakes whip out your credit card or no brakes 4 U.

You seriously overstated its limitation.

It covers 7 systems (Seven system support including engine, transmission, SRS, ABS, suspension, chassis, body control)

The 4 refers to (four from 28 of the most common service resets including DPF regen, oil life, brake bleed/pad reset, steering angle reset, battery matching, electronic throttle relearning, TPMS reset, injector coding, IMMO, SRS, EGR, sunroof, diesel engine exhaust gas filter & more) Most people don't need all 28 service resets. Or there are alternative ways to do it.

I am wondering whether it can provide misfire counts for each cylinder? Thanks.

I wonder if there is a hack out there to get all of the functionality. I really don't like companies that have a product that can do everything but they limit it's ability and hide it behind a paywall just to get more money out of you.

Overstated ? Hmm, maybe, but maybe we hold different priorities. When you purchase a house, when the escrow closes, by LAW anything on that property becomes yours including anything accidentally or intentionally left behind. Any functionality the house or property has is legally owned by you. This thinkcar unit would be like you buying a house and having to pick 4 things out of 28 and if the shower was not one of the 4 picks, you would have to pay extra to get the functionality of using the shower in your own home. Thinkcar's parent company are the same people that developed Launch obd2 reader. Back then their product Launch x431 was much more honest. When you bought their product there was no feature held hostage to be released only after ransom was paid. Less or more capability was a different model, what you get and what you pay for was up front and clear at the time of purchase. Less smoke and mirrors, more honest and straight forward.

Can you recommend a scanner with better price / quality ratio?

Sure, anything from launch that fits your needs and budget. They are more oriented towards professional mechanics at first and branched into DIY with more reasonably priced models. Honest marketing as opposed to thinkcar's buy the unit cheap then pay extra for functionality. Oh yeah, and that functionality stops being usable after your 1 year subscription then you can't use it till you purchase another subscription, and that is one subscription per feature, per year forever or your unit turns back into a paperweight. So those 24 features beyond the first 4 "free" will cost you $720 a year this year and every year after that you plan to use the unit. So all in for the first year will be $870 with the costco deal then $720 each year after, plus extra for ecu programing. Launch has the x431 geared towards mechanics that is complete, 2 years of updates and past those two years you can keep using it even if you don't update the database. They also have a gaggle of more DIY oriented models if the cost of the x431 does not fit your budget. Either way, the business model is upfront you buy their unit you get to use the whole unit, no features hidden behind paywalls that reset after a year. Try the Launch Creader 7, around $150. If it works for you it will keep on working year after year. Instead of turning back into a pumpkin after the 1 year subscription (per feature) expires and thinkcar wants more money or you can't use it. I've been out of the industry for many many years so do your own research and take what I've said with a grain of salt. I'm sure the landscape has changed, maybe significantly since then.

I've never had a car that didn't automatically learn new throttle bodies after a few start cycles. My free Roush CAL updates works take care of that if needed but I installed a bored throttle body and it learned the new throttle body after about 50 miles. I'm not knocking the tool but how many people are actually going to use those pay as you go features?

I don't see that it has 2-way communication. Shucks!
