Now with that all being said, I am probably putting it through a "worst case scenario" type situation. Dealing with horribly textured ceiling (popcornish) with a thick latex layer of paint over it (1/16" or thicker), all on a 10 percent pitch ceiling. I purchased this sander because I had a half sheet sander that I was trying to sand the texture down to a somewhat flat surface. I have this sander over my head for good period of time. Unless I was a gymnast that worked Still Rings, this is brutal on my upper body. Even with a battery, it is head heavy. Not very balanced. You have to make sure that the head is aligned with the pole or if the head starts to twist, it will grab the ceiling/ wall, dig in and then kick out if you are not paying attention. Keep it in the lower speed 1 or 2 unless you feel frisky and want to chase it across the wall or ceiling. Battery life? is ok with a 4 ah lightweight battery. Probably about 30-45 minutes maybe on the low speed. If higher speed, the battery life drops quick. I went with a few 4ah light weight batteries to cut down on weight (a little). The dust is very minimal, as long as you have a good working vacuum. Dust does like to collect on the bottom part of the head and anytime you bump something, dust will come out. A lot of times, they show the tool with sanding disc, it does not come with sanding discs. Even if the description says so. The cheaper drywall sanding disc on Amazon are ok, I'll probably cough up the money for the Joest ones at some point.
Would I recommend this to anyone? No. if you were doing light sanding/ touch up sanding. Maybe but nothing more than that. Anything you have to get aggressive and take off a lot of texture/ paint. This isn't the tool. Even at sale prices of $350 or so that I've seen it at, it isn't worth the cost. If you are a professional, maybe but that is still a big maybe.
I want to believe that this is a good tool, I paid for it and am using it for what I need it for but it is not doing the job easier. Like I said, I am no professional. A professional might say something different as they work with these type of tools all the time.
Typically, a drywall sander is used for sanding down the joint compound from the seams and fastener holes on a new drywall installation. What you're describing is far, far beyond the typical usage of this sort of tool.
I have a Porter Cable drywall sander and even without the batteries it is a heavy tool and will wear you out using it for a few hours to sand down the seams and fasteners for a room.
Textured plaster is often moistened and scraped off before trying to sand it smooth.
Yes, as a demo and by the time you hook up a vacuum and drag that hose around, a corded version taped to the hose has more power without the hassle of batteries. And if you want to use the bluetooth to turn on vacuum at same time, I don't know if other vacuums besides a specific DeWalt will work. A 5amp battery lasts about 20 minutes, so you need several of them with a charger close by. All in all, if I am running a cord for a decent powered vacuum and to charge batteries, I did not see the usefulness of this tool. Now, if you just want to run the tool without a vacuum attached, then maybe.
As my plaster guy says, learn how to finish and there is not much sanding required. He uses a damp sponge more than anything, but with 30 years or more experience, he makes it all look easy.
