It should be noted that registering gives you a chance to be selected to purchase one, it is not a guarantee.

If you do manage to get an invite, you have a very high chance of being able to buy one though!

This is the easiest way to get a console right now if you are still looking. You'll get an email a day or 2 before the event with a link to join at 2pm EST. I would suggest; Getting to the queue 5 mins or so before it opens, don't refresh your window once in, mine said over one hour before my chance, ended up being maybe 35 minutes before my turn came. First time I had an opportunity, the link didn't work. Second time I got through.

Based on my experience with multiple accounts, they give priority to those with ps plus. I have an account that never played games but with ps plus for years got invitation 4 times.

That doesn't seem accurate. I've bought two disc versions through Sony direct.

FWIW I got an invite about two months ago and successfully purchased one. I have no prior memberships or relationship with Sony in any way. So I'd say it's totally random.
