Before anyone comments on how good or bad the Lowes mulch is, please be aware that mulch is sourced semi-locally, so the quality of the mulch bought by one SDer will not be the same as another's.
No more cheap Lowes/Home Depot mulch for me.

A few years ago, I got artillery fungus, that was shooting black dots all over my siding, my deck, deck rails, etc. Those tiny black spots are impossible to remove!! That fungus can shoot black dots up as high as 8 feet!

I've since gone with straight cedar mulch delivered - bugs hate it, fungus does not seem to grow in it, and it does a great job keeping weeds down. Plus, the smell is AWESOME!

It's free in Austin from the city via our Resource Recovery program, but if you don't have a truck and want cheap mulch this is the move.

is this bad for adding to fruits and vegetable beds? do you guys know if the added color is harmful?
As someone already mentioned, these are sourced rather regionally. You can only really compare from the same locale. That said, the last time I got these from Lowes (mid-Michigan), the bags had construction material mixed in - like shingles and shit. Plus plastic bags, pallet wood chunks, vinyl siding, and some nails. Basically, they seem to have bagged stuff at the local dump and called it mulch. So I wouldn't trust this product anywhere near food gardens.

I pay much more now, but I get all mulch, soil, compost etc from a local landscaping supply that produces their own. Just the price for good fresh heirloom tomatoes. Big Grin

When is the best time to mulch? New home owner here
Right after your heavy spring rains (if you have them at your locale), and after the soil has warmed if you're a northerly type. And don't skimp - 4 or 5 inches will work much better.

Seriously a bag of wood mulch with shingles, plastic bags, pallet wood chunks, vinyl siding and nails.
Please provide a picture or I'm calling it as straight out lies...

Every year when this deal is posted, I read these comments here, with each negative nancy trying to one up the other..

First it was wood pellet chunks, then it was plastic bags.
Now you just took it to another level with vinyl siding, nails and shingles.

Unless you have pictures, I'm calling this one flat out

I buy 40-50 bags of these every year, I've done vigoro, earthgrow, Lowes and Home depot.
I've been buying these for 8 years straight.

NEVER have I seen any such things other in 1 bag out of 400 where I saw a 4inch piece that looked like it sheared of a 2 by 4 lumber piece. I know people say it varies locally, but that then means any telltales can be excused as different locale.

If bags of mulch was just packed with vinyl sidings, nails and shingles, that would be beyond a slickdeal comment issue.

The bottom line is like everything else, there are the hdmi people who will simply tell you why you shouldn't buy something that you literally put down annually...

If you need mulch, buy this or goto walmart and try the 2.49 per bag...
Worst case is you buy 5 bags and if you don't like it, save your $10 next year...

Gotta agree. I've been buying 60 bags a year since 2015. Mostly this cheap Lowes stuff. I might find a small stray piece of plastic or some larger sticks every once in a while, but it's very rare. Never have I found the kind of scraps that the other poster is talking about.

now i need a deal for landscape fabric...or can i just use paper boxes lol (i get endless amount of paper box for free)
Cardboard boxes are fine. Use any from your deliveries and remove moving tape if possible. Thick cardboard definitely helps to block weed growth. I do this every spring with cardboard boxes I've collected and broken down flat.

5-6 years back and I didn't keep a picture for you. (Run and post pictures on Slickdeals? Why would I do anything other than trailer the bags back and let the manager know? I'm not some twitter kid.)

Regardless, as I began my earlier post, regions may vary. So if you are not in mid-Michigan, your experience may not be comparable. Best of luck to you, though.

For anyone who is in mid-Michigan, I recommend Hammond Farms for mulch. I get 12 yards per spring and have never been less than satisfied.
