Before anyone comments on how good or bad the Lowes mulch is, please be aware that mulch is sourced semi-locally, so the quality of the mulch bought by one SDer will not be the same as another's.
No more cheap Lowes/Home Depot mulch for me.

A few years ago, I got artillery fungus, that was shooting black dots all over my siding, my deck, deck rails, etc. Those tiny black spots are impossible to remove!! That fungus can shoot black dots up as high as 8 feet!

I've since gone with straight cedar mulch delivered - bugs hate it, fungus does not seem to grow in it, and it does a great job keeping weeds down. Plus, the smell is AWESOME!

I had 5 unopened bags of this mulch from last year. It was stacked all winter long in my backyard. I just opened the bags and put in my beds. What I found was mold and termites. I had to quickly use a pesticide on all the mulch to kill the termites. I am anxious about the termites and hope they all died. I went through quite a bit of pesticide to try to soak all the mulch in it. I am now considering buying Walmart's mulch instead. Buyer beware.

There's a lot of stay cats around me in socal. The cats scratch into the mulch and leave odiferous presents.

Has anybody found a way to keep them from leaving their gifts? I can't help but cringe at the thought of all those doos in all the mulch piles out there in the world.

The cat attraction properties and limited use due to the dyes, preventing use around fruits and veggies, makes me not a repeat buyer.
You probably need to go with pine bark nuggets instead of traditional mulch. Cats hate anything pine - pine cones, pine needles, etc. Pine bark nuggets also last much longer than this mulch but they are more expensive.

lowes mulch is fine in so cal. Scotts is better and gives more per cuft, but this $2 price is gold right now. Won't ever see this again..
I mean.. It gets this low pretty much every year, but it's still a good time to stock and redo the yard for the spring.

I had to buy a ton of it from walmart at 2.47/bag so you're welcome everyone for this sale.

I've used both, Walmart's is better and is 2.47 everyday

That's confusing to me, as bags seem more convenient than shoveling out a pile. I can just throw a few bags into the wheelbarrow, wheel it to where I want it, do a quick X-shaped cut on e back of the bag and it comes right out easy peasy.
Exactly this. I can't see where people want to shovel it into things, to then transport to then shovel or dump it. Your process is the same as mine although I just do a triangle at the bottom and drag it and spread it that way.

I will say the mulch from a landscape place does look better. It usually is a finer shred.

Hoping tractor supply co does theirs fore this price soon too. Just a better location for me. HD can burn in hell for reducing their bags to 1.5 cu/ft.

edit: looks like I got it from TSC on 4/1 last year and don't see any sales for it yet. Might have to schlep over to Lowe's

When is the best time to mulch? New home owner here
Depends on where you are at and what you have around you. I have sugar maples in my back yard and I won't mulch until the whirlygigs fall. Otherwise they make all my new mulch look like crap again. It is hard when the weather warms up. I want to do it so bad, but no, have to wait. Or do the job twice.

Can you elaborate on crushed brick as mulch? Where do you get that?
Landscape companies and gravel suppliers sell loads of it. It looks like crushed red dark rock. You put down a landscape fiber and then dump this on top. Lasts decades.

now i need a deal for landscape fabric...or can i just use paper boxes lol (i get endless amount of paper box for free)
You don't want to use fabric… it's plastic and will break down over time into your soil. It also only prevents weeds for about 6 months… the seeds fall from the air on top will bring weeds. Just re-mulch once a yr

The crushed brick works for me man. Certainly doesn't look cheap. I'm NY and it's nice having good looking landscaping all year round.
My last house I had to excavate all the years of dead mulch away from the house. It had raised grade like 6" over the years.
I also don't like all the herbicides and dye they used to keep molds away. It's not great stuff.
Where is the best place to get crushed brick? I'm looking for better alternatives that won't break the bank
