Garbage specifically? Maybe.

Trespassing? No - still a crime.
Recycling? No - that's a crime as well in most states I've lived regardless of where the bins are located. On your property it's your property, on the curb it is the property of the waste collection company and taking recycling is theft - most likely because it's money generating. I believe that is county specific for me but could be statewide.

I can't say what the "spackling buckets" are going to be used for but if just requires cleaning and is recyclable then many construction sites will recycle. In fact, the job might require that stuff to be recycled to qualify for certain certifications at the end of the job. These are related to green building certifications like Leed.

To answer for your supreme court ruling, probably referring to Greenwood vs California? That would not fly in WA state at least where *state* level laws would increase protections for residents and garbage is seen as inviolate insofar as searches by government employees without a court order. That doesn't discuss random people going through it though. So I'm not 100% if it's at the curb - still 100% illegal if it's on the person's property.

So while you're stealing stuff from a construction site and trying to justify it - you may still be breaking the law. I mean - you're definitely breaking the law by entering the property and taking trash. Possibly two laws involved there.
FFS it's reduce, reuse, 'recycle'. Clearly don't break any laws, but if they put the trash out in a public area, it's free game, or it goes into a landfill. If you want to be safe, just ask the crew. Or just discourage everyone and let all the trash end up in a landfill so more people spend $5 on buckets from stores.

Seriously, I don't know where you have lived, but they literally take this 'recyclable' material and ship it out to other countries. Especially if it is in ANY WAY DIRTY. So that spackle bucket they did not clean perfectly? Yeah that's not getting recycled for anything. It's literally not worth their time to power clean it, even if that's what they say they are doing. How about all your other stuff that's recyclable? Well it's not. https://www.cbc.ca/documentaries/...-1.5735618 There are plenty more links around. Your tax money was, and is, completely wasted.

The next time one of these damn spackle buckets washes up at the beach I will think of you and everyone else drinking the stupid coolaid on this.

For anyone else, just say you are getting them from food establishments to stop these sheep from commenting back. I am totally for following the 'rules' but recycling theater and laws that supposedly help the environment, but hurt it, and tax pickers doing actual good, is complete bullshit.

$3.67 for me.

I use these for smoker pellets, work great.
Tried this, but they burned funny, made a mess and gave off an awful odor.

Definitely not dust collection lol. Lowe's and HD buckets are wayyyyy to thin for that. They implode immediately. Lol.

You'd think "2 buckets stacked into each other"? Nope. Still too thin. Lol.
Your setup is wrong. https://www.dustopper.com/faq/ How about you contact the company next time instead of blaming the bucket. You will get a lot more dust captured if your setup is correct.

A more durable bucket will just ensure your restriction does not collapse the bucket. The restriction is still there and more debris will make it into the vacuum.

Hey, you're the one saying go behind a construction site and take dirty buckets. That's what I replied to.

Like I said, recycling is typically protected against theft because the city or utility that collects the recycling stands to make money. If it's in the recycling bin (whether it qualifies to be recycled or not) it's against the law where I am - regardless of where it's located ( the bin).

For construction sites they will clean and recycle anything they can if they're trying to qualify for Leed status - I know this from personal experience. It also gets inspected to see if it qualifies. Residential and business waste aren't handled the same.

Here, I'll just say this : if you want to ask the crew that's fine but otherwise, stay the hell out of construction sites.

Think about me all you want.

So what's your point genius?
First of all, I am a genius compared to your comment. Second of all, it's apparent you don't read the comments before you comment. Go back to the beginning and you'll find someone saying they were going to HF to pick up a free bucket. Another person asked what magic this was to get a free bucket. I responded to that person who was wondering about the magic to get a free bucket at HF. And then there's you. Clueless. Kudos to desynergy and younodadeal for pointing out the obvious that you missed.

a 'not a good price', 'not a good product' and an unspecific 'thumb down'.

begs the questions: 1) what price are you looking for? 2) what do you want for two dollars?

If you have a Firehouse subs close by they sell their used pickle tubs (so it's food safe) for $5 with all proceeds going to lifesaving equipment for firefighters. And you're recycling. Just an option if it fits your use case.
do they come with lids?

If you would have actually read the case history, you would have realized that it specifically stated that garbage NOT on private property is fair game. And to state what should have been obvious, garbage and recycling are not the same thing. Further, state law cannot contradict Supreme Court rulings.

Free spackle buckets behind any construction site, they clean easily.
Sam's Club and pretty much any grocery store as well. The frosting they use comes in them. Meat markets - the sausage casings come in pails.

The proper legal term is "curtilage". Some states do not allow until obviously set out for disposal. If a cart is against house/garage vs. at curb on collection day totally different rules in most states. Some treat a cart differently than co-mingled in the trucks. This has gone to SCOTUS and affirmed.

I got the frosting buckets to put wood pellets in (food safe and all) from my local Kroger. Like 3 gallons.

However, the lids are those had a peel off tab/wrap around the lid base. After removed, the lid was no longer secure and air/water tight as the lip didn't go over the top of the bucket anymore...just flush around most of it. wasted a bag of pellets as they got moisture.

beware.

get the 5 gallon ones with secure lids to keep liguids in or out.

I've gotten what are maybe 3.5 gal that are that way. But mine have both square and round types. The round lids are okay. Square ones, nope.
