Is there really that much variation between panels of the same model?

Picture wise, it's very smooth clear and the colors are absolutely amazing. The only CON is in a complete black screen, I can see see unevenness and bleeding in some part of the corners. This is noticeable when it's at 100% brightness in a pitch black room.
Another complaint is how sticky the protective clear tape is. It's fine on the bezel, but it's on the edge of the screen too! It felt painful peeling it from the panel itself. Luckily it's just the edge of the screen. Just peel slow and across the direction. Have the TV off as well when peeling the tape.
Its picture quality isn't special because it doesn't get bright, so glare is an issue in really bright rooms, and highlights don't pop in HDR. It also lacks extra features like local dimming or Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support, and it can't display a wide color gamut, so it doesn't deliver a satisfying experience if you normally stream content in HDR.

I recommend getting the series 55 inch TCL QLED from Bestbuy. They usually have it on sale for $400 from time to time.

The quality of TVs has dropped all around as the companies sell their brand names to Chinese companies who compete to make the cheapest TV possible these days.
You can get a 55" Samsung TV for $400, so it's getting pretty competitive these days. I've had a couple of friends with TCL TVs. One is working fine, but the other crapped out in about 2-3 years. Another friend bought one of those 55' Samsungs and it crapped out in like 2 years. So you really can't trust any brand these days. Next time I may take a shot on an LG or something.
Hisense is the same as Sharp. Probably the same quality as the TCL. Both Chinese companies, and there's nothing wrong with that.

That's crazy , very cheap
Also, there's this stupid idea that you have to get some super duper bright high quality OLED HDTV to enjoy your TV viewing experience. I've been saying this for over a decade, IT DOESN'T MATTER what fru-fru features an HDTV has, what matters is whether it looks good on your wall at home. And even the cheapest HDTV's are going to look nice on your wall at home. You won't be comparing it to some other HDTV hanging beside it. Whether it's a $300 Hisense or an $4,000 Samsung, you are going to love it. Stop being brand/price snobs and embrace what you can get for much less than those fru-fru models.
Update: as of May 3 the update hasn't arrived. So this TV will only do stereo PCM audio. No Dolby audio as advertised.
Tempted to buy this 55 inch version for $60 more but it may be too big for a laptop monitor!
