Really good price on these. Yeah, Elgato is the "Apple of streaming" when it comes to price, but also when it comes to quality.

Pretty great deals on all their refurb things, actually. The Keylight Air is a steal (https://www.corsair.com/us/en/Cat...AB9901-REF).

Looks like a lot of their refurb listings are technically placeholders because some are out of stock. Filter by in stock to see everything (https://www.corsair.com/us/en/sea...tatingText)

Thanks. I already have the 1080p version of this. I'm glad to get the 4k version of this at a good price.

do these require any software/driver installation?
a friend lent me his no name HDMI usb stick and i was shocked it captured HDMI sources without any software. just pure plug n play. in Windows10, it shows up as a camera source. when he told me it was only $25 on amazon, i was equally amazed.

Cheapos will look pretty fine unless you do a side-by-side comparison.

UVC devices should be plug n play. It's why that HDMI stick works without any software from the manufacturer.

"Cheapos"

Depends on the use, but that's true.
Higher resolution, more detail, costlier.

Even today with 4k, 8k in YouTube, the majority of visitors aren't watching them in even 4k, but instead, much lower resolutions.
So while it may be that a channel can put up 4k+, revenue and viewership don't follow the ever increasing resolution game.
Also, what's being captured?
Obviously if it's console gaming/bluray/4k disc, you'd need a hdmi descrambler to access the video feed, and 2k descramblers cheaper.
If it's for use as a webcam connected to a camera, great. But check camera manufacturer - some of them provide direct webcam feature updates now - no need for a capture device.
Etc.
And, do we need to see every gamer acne pore in 8k?

2k to 4k to 8k quadruples (or increases 4x) the bandwidth required at each resolution jump.
So while 2k plays on almost everything, 4k cripples some pc/phones, and 8k murders even more.
Buyers need to keep this in mind and not complain when older PCs can't handle 4k/8k video captures.

(Microcenter had the 2k under $15 on sale this year..)

Not sure if thus applies here but I had an older elgato capture device and some stuff had copyright protection. But a cheap hdmi splitter from eBay handled that for me. Essentially, get the cheap Chinese stuff as they don't care about that stuff.

Resolution = horizontal pixels x vertical pixels
Megapixels = horizontal pixels times vertical pixels
K = short hand for the above.

Eg 1920x1080 = 2,073,600 pixels or roughly 2 megapixels (MP) = 2K
3840x2160 (horizontal and vertical pixels double that of 2K) = 8,294,400 pixels or roughly 8MP = 4K
7680x4320 (horizontal and vertical pixels double that of 4k)= 33MP = 8K.

4K is the same as 4 2K monitors stacked side-by-side in a 2x2 arrangement.

8K is the same as 4 4K monitors stacked 2x2. Or 16 2K monitors stacked 4x4.

What this means is instead of buying 4 2K monitors to get lots of desktop space to multitask, you can simply buy 1 4k monitor - same total number of pixels to spread out lots of windows on.

Gamers with those superwide monitors?
Basically a 4K monitor chopped in half horizontally.

...

In the computer world, pixels or the standard resolution labels (VGA, SVGA, WUVGA, etc) are often used.

In the camera world, megapixels are often used.

In the TV world and video world, K is often used.
(Eg 8K hdtv or 4K ultra bluray disc.)

...

No idea why the world can't just get along and standardize on one resolution labeling system! $!@&&@

...

https://www.microcenter.com/produ...ure-dongle
This can take any input up to 4K and output up to 2K for the captured video.
$14.99 but cheaper on sale.

Anything that looks similar is likely the same thing rebranded and sold all over the net. Same cheap Chinese video capture device. Just plug and play - shows up instantly in OBS etc.

...

For the webcam online streaming crowd, cameras directly connected provide better quality and easier connection.

Eg https://imagingedge.sony.net/en-u...ebcam.html with a compatible Sony camera. And you can use the camera for regular uses, too.

...

One benefit of these hdmi capture devices is you can turn any pc/laptop into a 2nd monitor. Just full screen the live hdmi input on the pc, plug the other end of the hdmi into the hdmi output of anything else, and boom, pc becomes an external monitor.

Lol.

Work light clipped to monitor bounced is cheaper and can be far brighter with a ge superbright led bulb (3000 lumens vs 800 lumen 60w bulb)...

This is complicated by the fact we call 2560x1440 monitors "2K or UHD" and 1080p just "FHD"

They're also in no way effectively controllable. The users of those lights need fine control over the light output.
