Yeah, the problem with the Mossimo at Costco is that the top compressor makes it harder to reach and grab things. But I get wanting it just for the warranty.

The problem with e coolers is that there are so many brands and all seem to have good reviews and around the same price range. Just hard to know which to go with. They are commodities at this point.

I just have to remember that like any product, the majority of people submitting a review are doing so because of a bad experience. All of the people who like the product never submit a review. So the numbers are skewed.
This is a true compressor-based unit, not one with a Peltier Junction cooler. Those have lousy effieciency.
Even that is hard to do now. I assume any good review is a paid reviewer on most products.

One pain on this one is that per the warranty, after two months, return shipping for warranty purposes is at your expense.

The more I look at the return and warranty processes on these, the more tempted I am to just grab the 40 liter from Costco. I don't like the design as much, but I can just drag it back to a store.

I like the Costco one better due to higher vents won't be blocked. No brainer choice.

the 50 quart one has wheels too.

How do you use this as a portable refrigerator? If it needs to be plugged I guess I don't understand the purpose?

It allows you to cool or even freeze your food without requiring constant replenishing of ice. It's most useful for RV's or boondockers who will go for days or weeks at a time without being connected to anything.

You can power it off something like a 12v battery or mid-sized power bank. A simple 100w solar panel /w battery can keep this thing running endlessly.

If anyone is on the fence, I bought an equivalent unit (iceco brand) while back and it's turned into my favorite cooler.
Super useful for getting and keeping things cold and has shut off functions for vehicles etc.
If stuff is already cold, even a small Ryobi inverter (18v one) powers this for hours and hours.
Very small power draw on most of these when measured with a kill-a-watt.
It's worth noting that the Iceco fridges use Secop compressors, which Dometic used to use.

After obsessively researching fridges late last year, I went with a 45 qt Iceco and have been very happy with it.
I actually ended up buying a used 50 qt ARB fridge off a coworker around the same time and between the two I actually prefer the Iceco due to the opening orientation of the lid as well as the slightly smaller dimensions.

Looking at this fridge, the handles and closing latch look like deal breakers. Lifting a loaded fridge would be pretty unpleasant with those thin handles. And the closing latch looks dinky and exposed to snagging on things.

From the reviews it seems it cannot handle a hot environment that well:

"I did find in the manual that if the ambient temp is over 90* it will not work properly and that is TRUE so True No where do they say that until you buy the unit ."

Costco has the 40 qt massimo on sale for $270, I think that's a comparable or better deal considering the warranty and LG compressor

https://www.costco.com/massimo-cx...66493.html
I have the Massimo 40 from Costco and I basically run it all the time. Works great, but it's been debated whether it really uses an LG compressor. I peeked through the vents on mine and the compressor has Anuodan HuaJun written on it. If that's where LG sources their compressor from, then great. But I didn't note that it actually said LG on it anywhere.

Just got mine in. I like the handles, have to wait 24 hours to turn it on because of shipping but I really like the build quality. I really like the color as well. The lid latch seems fine and is low profile. I'm very happy with it and haven't even turned it on yet..

Usage question - I had never heard of these portable fridges until I saw this SD post. Special needs family, young kids - we travel about 2-3 hours away at most for day trips (zoo, aquarium, museum, big park, etc) and eating at restaurants/fast food is difficult.

How much heat do these give off? Does it need a lot of space around it for airflow? Could I run it in a minivan on a road trip to a zoo/other location, leave it plugged into an inverter (EGO) while vehicle is off and come back to chilled drinks and unspoiled food for lunch and dinner? Thanks in advance.

I had my fair share of experiences about portable fridge and I wasted a lot of money just to learn something. I want to share what I've learned.

The compressor is the heart of these mini fridges and all I can say is that if the manufacturer isn't proud and won't disclose what brand of compressor they are using, then they are using some Chinese cheap compressor. Cheap compressors that are Loud, inefficient, vibrates and will break in few months.

Look for the compressor brand. I always go for the Secop - a German brand compressor (formerly know as Danfoss). This compressor brand is THE BEST!

ARB, Dometic are some of the expensive durable big brands that use Secop compressor but you can also go with ICECO, a cheaper alternative but still uses the Secop compressor.

Whynter doesn't seem to disclose what kind of compressor they use. All good brands that use Secop will proudly tell you they are using Secop and will not hide the fact.

Yeah that's no problem at all and would work fine in that situation, this does have a 12v plug and a low battery shut off (so your car actually starts) if your minivan plugs work while the vehicle is off.
I have a smaller ryobi 18v inverter I've used for a few hours in the car with a 6ah battery, as long as the stuff is cold before you go out this should be no problem.

I own the older model for nearly 8 years. Currently broken and fixed it once before a few years ago. Good deal if you can fix yourself.

There are too many negative comments about the unit malfunctioning after only a few months for me to feel comfortable with buying one of these. I was really excited at first. Going to have to conduct some non-amazon research.
Often the problem is not the product but the handling of the product before it gets to you. If you end up with a lousy carrier, you can end up with the unit stacked on its side or upside down and/or banged up pretty bad.

For those purchasing this, note that it seems to work well for car trips and truckers and the like where the cab temperatures aren't that high, but reviewers say if ambient is over 90oF the compressor has trouble keeping pace. In addition, its recommended to use this with the bag, as it needs the extra insulation help.

Lastly, if the box is damaged, just go ahead and process a return its not worth risking it. If the box is not damaged, take out and inspect the unit and then just leave it sitting in the correct orientation for a week before turning it on and testing it out. And know that when you transport this, you need to keep it level at all times, and you shouldn't run it at more than a 30o angle from level.

Solid fridge. I had previously had the industry standard ARB 50qt but after selling it and deciding I needed another fridge for my Jeep, this is the route I went. I had this Whynter in my Jeep for about two years before moving it onto a trailer. It's still being bounced around on the trails, solid buy!
