PREY is Brilliant. Think Outer Worlds, but on a space station.
Fully agree on the Brilliant part but not so much The Outer Worlds as Prey has a mystery theme that I don't remember on The Other Worlds. Both are great, tho!
Plug for Jotun too! Get it if you don't have it, and play it. I absolutely loved it. Beautiful, beautiful little game. The exploration is so relaxing, and you can feel the team's love for Norse myth in every minute. There's a lot of beautiful little details that didn't even need to be there -- like at one point you're running around the branches of Yggdrasil and you get all these little cameos from various entities out of myth. They didn't have to include that. It had nothing to do with the game proper. But it added so much to the feel of the game, and really made you appreciate the culture and mythos that informed the game. I felt they really conveyed that uniquely Norse tendency toward heroic sacrifice well, too -- the game is about a shieldmaiden who unfortunately drowned at sea, which was considered an unworthy death. So she spends this whole game trying to "impress the gods". And that's literally what the game is about. She's not trying to come back to life, she's not trying to turn back time, none of that. She just wants to earn a good death.
And then. AND THEN: you get to the boss battles and, damn, it's like all of a sudden this relaxing beautiful game shows its teeth and reminds you why Norse cultures glorified warriors. These were some of the toughest, but ultimately most rewarding, boss battles I've EVER played. They really push you, and you really feel like you're a tiny but brave shieldmaiden chipping away at the toes of friggin giants. The music is absolutely unforgettable too, and the fact that all the voiceover is done in Icelandic, which is thought to be the closest extant language to Old Norse, really adds a layer of immersion.
Finally, if you make it to the end -- and you really should -- I'm just gonna say it was a short, but satisfying af ending.
Surprised to see that Jotun was already in my library. Should be a good game. I played Bad North all the way through ... it was a surprisingly good and simple game.
I absolutely loved the original Prey, and while I hear good things about this one, I'm saddened to hear that there is no connection. 😭
Same, loved the original when it came out. Also such high hopes for the supposed sequel that never came to be. I think that impacted my views of the game overall and I did not love it as much as everyone else. That said if you're a system shock fan I would recommended it
