Seems like such a niche product. Not sure who would buy this.

Seems like two niche products crammed into one. On one hand its comparable to other "gamer" soundbars for PC which are usually decent compact substitutes for a speaker that do "okay". On the other hand it has bluetooth and audio out with the following high end DAC:
"Hi-Fi Quad DAC - ESS9038 Pro", which is in theory comparable with other standalone DACs in the 300 range (however no idea if the audio implementation is good).

I would personally think of it more as buying it for the high end DAC that just happens to have a battery, bluetooth, and speaker but that's just me. Probably will get one and give it a shot.

Buy a cheap desktop amplifier like the Aiyima A07 for $80 and compact passive speakers like the Mirage nanosats for $50 a pair on ebay/fb marketplace and you'll have a computer stereo 2.0 that beats any Bluetooth or powered speaker setup below $500.
Misses the point of having a convenient portable single package of a new product with a real warranty. If one is buying a sound bar you can assume sound quality is not going to be the top priority.

Looks corny to me honestly.

I've been using a Bose Cinemate I picked up on Craigslist for years now. If you have space for that ridiculous subwoofer it makes for a great PC speaker setup.

What makes this a gaming speaker? Is that just advertising verbiage to charge more?

I believe it's due to its "positional" sound when using as a speaker. I think it's going for a headphone replacement, hence the noise canceling part as well. I guess theoretically you would be able to communicate clearly when using a speaker, which normally doesn't happen unless you have a super cardioid mic or something like that. Honestly, that dac is usually 200ish by itself so I'm tempted just to use it for that.

The original $400 is insane. Even $200 seems high. The only reason I could see owning something like this is if you plan on traveling with your laptop. Otherwise, you can get better studio speakers for the same price or cheaper. Shoot, my Dolby Atmos surround system was $260 (open box).

Quad DAC? Is this in the same line of thinking as using a second calculator to check the first calculators work?

Posting the obligatory video on the GP9 from LTT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eY5AQhEeTc0

One thing that is neat (to me) is that the shape of the speaker fits right into the vshaped area created by the feet of so many gaming monitors nowadays where nothing fits and looks right. I use vesa to mount to monitor arms so it doesn't personally help me... but it would work well for many setup pics I see on my discords.

Also, what makes this a gaming soundbar is the built in microphone with the supposedly effective noise cancelling so gaming audio (or any sound coming from the sound bar) is eliminated / cancelled out so that the people you are talking to via the mic can't hear it. It also has a 4 pole headset jack, unlike most other sound bars, for when you do have to use a headset to respect other people sharing your space.

All that said... yeah $400 is nuts. I can see why with that ESS9038 implementation, but imho that DAC is overkill, they could have gone with a much cheaper one and lowered the price and no one would have known the difference... the people who care about a 9038 probably aren't looking at sound bars like this. $200 is obv better, but for me to try it out... needs to be $150 or less... mainly because I prefer a setup with stereo speakers spread farther apart, better speakers, etc. This would be a rare use case toy.

LG designed this as a one stop shop for audio it even has a battery. But in doing so they made it such a niche product because those who want a specific unit will look elsewhere. A topping dx3pro+ is a more powerful unit if u want just a dac/amp combo for example. price does need to come down a bit more to make it more attractive.

Same people that shell out big bucks for the latest CPU release because it grants them an additional 0.1 GHz advantage to their current rig.

I get that.

But if you're all about performance, you're getting a nice headset or dedicated receiver and passive speakers.

This is like… if you want some performance, a gaming aesthetic, want something portable, and have very limited space.

If one of those things isn't true, you're better off with something else.
